This article mentions only GPS but it should be noted that GPS is only the US constellation of satelites and GNSS - Global Navigation Satelite Systems, or collection of all constellations is what drones utlize for positioning and navigation. There are various types of GNSS based solutions, by far the most common is for navigation, followed by positioning. While navigation is ubiquitous with flight, positioning is related to the integrity of data drones are used to gather. GNSS based positioning allows drone sensors to generate highly acurate measurements while navigation allows them to traverse the skies reliably. GNSS is also one of many navigation methods used by drones, drones also heavily utilize inertial and optical navigation methods.

The best use case for blockchain in GNSS that I have come across are distributed GNSS corrections data networks which utilize the GNSS base reciever as the token miner. This motivates users of the network to participate and grow the reach of the networked base station by also benefiting themselves in mining tokens which can be spent to gain access to the broad corrections network for their own needs. This method is promising because it disrupts the traditional GNSS service provider business model and improves the availability of centimeter grade accuracy. However, this relies on regional GNSS integrity and does not add a layer of redundancy should the space and control segments of the system fail or enter a period of selective availability.

Blockchains or ledgers are great for keeping track of transactions but GNSS is a passive system with one way communication between the satelite vehicles and users on earth. There is an argument for blockchain to guard against spoofing but there is a simpler solution to that, encryption. Navstar GPS for example has always broadcast a civilian and military signal. The military signal is encrypted and only those users have the key. This is an effective guard against spoofing since it is impossible to replicate and rebroadcast a code which you do not have but both the source and destination do. The civilian signal is able to be spoofed because the key is known to all. Blockchain cannot be evenly applied to solve challenges in GNSS security.
