Your recording environment is 95% of the quality. If your room acoustics are poor, using the best microphone, pre-amp and A/D converter aren't going to help you whatsoever in improving it.

When we talk about environment it's important to understand that the room tone is one of the main things affecting your sound. You need it to fit your arrangement. If the room is too dry, the sound would be harsh and unnatural, if it’s too reflective it might be harder to put it in the right space later in the mix. The general rule would be to think of it as a part of the timbre that you strive to achieve. Recording under the blanket or in a closet are not the answer to a poorly sounding room. Experiment with the placement of both the source and the microphone to find the right spot and ideally - learn more about the acoustics and find ways to improve it - it’s possible and it’s not necessarily pricey if one knows what they’re doing.

Certain equipment such as a Preamplifier is able to send the sound signal frequency to the level of your Sound system. This interface usually consists of at least 2 faders and a master with inputs XLR and TRS for MIDI, Instruments, and other musical equipment. For example, a Condenser microphone such as the Popular Neumann will need 48+Volts called Phantom Power to boost to the signal levels addressed to the DAW; Digital Audio Workstation such as Protools or Ableton for example. A common preamplifier that would be at home would be such as the Scarlett Pro or FocusRite. Take your time on this step, as the space you record in will have the single biggest impact on quality.

The most important thing to keep in mind is the recording environment should be completely silent. Try to keep your phone on silent or best switch it off. The windows should be closed or curtains be drawn. Another thing that is often overlooked is the static noises such as that of a fan or the interference of a phone during recording. Also ensure you do not "breathe" in too hard into the microphone :)

Protip: If there is no way to avoid recording on a hot day, use a ventilator rather than AC. Audio equipment picks up AC sounds far more than a (fairly silent) ventilator. Also, ventilator sounds are easier to pick up and remove in editing, as per my audio recording experienced colleague.

I've made records in my garage and in some of the best studios in the world, I have focused on these areas: - I/O - Conversion. Invest in a good interface (I love an audient Id4 for the price point and portability). - Preamp Get a good preamp. Whilst your audio interface may have a good clean preamp, this is where a lot of the character of your sound comes from. (personally I love the WARM audio stuff for the price point and quality) - Microphone Get a good microphone, I recommend a good condensor and a good Dynamic. Make sure you factor in the polar pattern as this will help with isolation which i will come onto. (Im currently using, AT2020 and SM7b) - Isolation Take time to Isolate your signal and reduce bleed and reflections.

You don't ever want to clip so turn it down low enough to compensate.

On final mix make sure you have a good pair of studio reference monitors for mixdown that is the most inportant thing to acheving a good balanced mix . Have a sound recording to listen to before you ever start mixing. Sitdown in your chair where you're going to mix from and play the recording that you want your mix to sound like. Listen to it till that sound of that recording is stuck in your head. Then you will have set reference points on what the different instruments should sound like, and by doing so your mixes will be consistent. The bottom line is you have got to train and trust your ears.

A good edit is only possible if you can hear what's going on. In an ideal world, you'll have a treated room and a set of monitors. Realistically, most of us will edit with headphones, though, so get a good pair; this is a much more important purchase early on than your mic. Before you start editing, please make sure you have some backups of your original recordings. You never know when you might need to return to the drawing board if an edit doesn't work out. Before you make your first edit, listen to your recording a few times and ensure you have a vision of what you want to achieve. This will evolve and change as you go, but wait to start cutting or adding effects until you have some idea of what you want to achieve.

Trimming/fading audio files is crucial! It takes a little time at first, but you should always dedicate time to solo audio files to make sure there aren’t any unwanted noises. Especially with vocals , when you’re stacking tracks, the noise will add up fast and you can forget where it came from. This can be caused by high gain on preamps/compressors, background noise, “pop” noise of a file being split, etc. Make trimming a habit and save yourself a headache later

One thing I have found help is manually editing words with Ss, Ts, Fs, Ps before using effects and plugins, just looking at the wave form by zooming in, you would be able to locate them, drop them down to taste, before applying plugins.

While mixing and mastering make sure you experiment with different plugins to ensure you get the sound you’re looking for. At the very least you’re going to want to use an Equalizer (EQ) and a compressor. But not all EQs and Compressors are the same. You also don’t want to over compress. During the mixing process you want to leave some room in your mix for the mastering portion. For example try to keep my mix at around -6db to -9db so when I master the audio file or send the audio file to be mastered there’s room for you to enhance different frequencies if need be. I’ve also found it’s better to have a project specifically for mixing a song and a project for specifically for mastering. I do this so I don’t ruin the mix while mastering

As many fancy plugins as there are in the market today, mastering is mainly a combination of equalizing, compressing, and limiting (adding gain and trimming peaks). One thing to consider though is what medium you're working on, because each medium (podcast, songs, etc.) has a loudness level that will be different. Make sure you look this up and use a loudness meter (most software has one built in) to make sure the loudness levels (also called the LUFS, LKFS, or RMS level) are adjusted to the industry standard.

Any task worth learning is worth doing badly for a while in order to become good at it eventually. Also note that listening is work and it is tiring. Give your ears rest. I find it very useful to give at least a day (sometimes several) between mixing and mastering.

Whether you're creating, mixing and mastering in a best of class room, or your nan's basement it's crucial to check your work on the kind of output systems it'll be heard on most. Generally this includes a mobile phone, laptop, Bluetooth speaker and club PA system (if you're making any kind of club oriented music). My favourite place to test mixes however is in the car, especially when I am driving. If you can hear the main elements of the mix correctly and the mix balance is good over road noise at 70mph, then you're definitely heading in the right direction.

It helps to understand your audience. You'd rather not splurge a lot on fancy mics and post production if your audience ends up listening to your audio on a cheap to mid range phone using in-built speakers. There's a world of difference between spoken work/podcasts and music recording as well. If you want to get something out fast, there are so many tools available now that can get your audio quality just ok (read: not noticeably bad) even if you can't afford an expensive mic, recording environment or post production.

Be diligent with attention to gaining the very best recording signal you can get! All these suggestions are very great advice, but the first thing (and most important) is to start with capturing the best quality recording. Everything after this first step is useless if we don't capture a good clean signal within range and no clipping. Once a file clips it's trash! No years of engineering tricks and tips, or fancy plug-ins will doctor this up. Be diligent in focusing as much attention to this as you do with your mixing! Be consistent with this aspect and your work-flow will become easier and easier to put out quality mixes.

I always use reference mixes, usually of other professional-quality audio and from established composers and soundtrack artists. I am also not afraid to remove an element, whether a musical part or an effect, rather than add more in an attempt to 'fix' things.
