In my experience, I have served in various capacities and one of them was as a 'Continuity Director'. Ensuring consistent audio (and video) post production work was my major responsibility. Here are 3 major actions to take in achieving this- i) ..understand the direction/genre/plot/scope of the content (audio, video or both) in production, (pre and post), ii) continually monitor your feedbacks and levels on set and in post and finally iii) you can only achieve this by working hand in hand with the director, producer and editors (audio/video engineers)

One thing I’ve found to be helpful is by first understanding the target end vision. Yes a good workflow that has proven to be fast and efficient is critical but we cannot go at each production as our last. Be willing to adjust your workflow per production. Communicate with clear understanding before beginning is key to a successful completion with minimum finishing changes.

We all like to think we have super-sonic hearing and are immune to the mundane effects of the post production slipknots but having reference audio is critical to maintaining levels of standard. Taking breaks to allow the hearing to regain strength, although take strict self-diligence, will save time overall.

Keeping consistent levels is sure to refrain you from back-tracking towards the end of the project. Take the time to add the correct most efficient metering tools into your workflow. Also, check your levels with at least three different mediums. Listen at different gain levels while doing so as a caution measure to give final approval of the mix. Take the time to adjust even the smallest of infractions, you will save yourself in the end.

4 Check your phase

Phase is the relationship between two or more audio signals that share the same frequency. When two signals are in phase, they add up and sound louder. When they are out of phase, they cancel out and sound quieter or distorted. Checking your phase is important to ensure clarity, depth, and stereo width in your audio. Such measures include, but are not limited to; using EQ to control frequency masking, using parallel compression to retain original transient, or using proper signal flow such as using a gate before an EQ unless the track has resonance issues. Know your dynamic processors to prevent such mistakes as using a gate or compressor to reduce excess noise during the quiet part of a song. These are all manners in which to help reduce phasing issues.
