When there is even a slight concern that their discussions might be disclosed to management, the potential for experiencing the full benefits of a transformative coaching journey is significantly hindered.

I am an executive coach and would like to give you my two cents. 1. Ensure you have a reason why you need a coach. 2. Hire a trustful coach. See his historic performance, search for achievements and referrals. 3. Build up a set of boundaries and rules and ask coach’s commitment he can do the job while following the rules. 4. Mind that successful coaches never tell you what / how you have to do. By following the above you will be able to mitigate the risks of hiring a non trustful executive coach.

Setting expectations and boundaries regarding the mentor/mentee relationship is essential. Part of the expectations should be a mutual agreement that everyone is in the process together. A great executive coach will push you - and likely, will make you uncomfortable at some point - to break down the barriers and roadblocks that are holding you back. That said, everyone has a different comfort level when it comes to "being pushed," and that needs to be established early in the relationship so there's also a degree of comfort in the working relationship. The best coaches, however, will not only push you but also support you unequivocally. When that mixture exists with a coach, you know you've found someone to work with for the long haul.

No matter how tech savvy, experienced, or culturally aware you are, there'll be gaps in your perspective that you can bolster e.g. being coached by someone you normally wouldn't consider. In particular, if you're looking to move onto the 'next' role, the tendency is to focus on utilising the archetype 'coach' - why not think outside the box and look for a different type of coach than you, or your peers, would usually look for? So rather than bringing the same "game" to the table, just #changethegame - you might be surprised at what new worlds it'll open for you ??

The truth is, there is no way to be 100% sure of confidentiality in ANY 2 person conversation. The best method is to not put anything into written or recorded (electronic or otherwise) communications that you wouldn't be able to live with were it to become public. This constitutes a challenge to open communication but in a world where any misstep in your wording or assumed intent could hurt you professionally & personally. It's the same thing we tell our kids about social media. Once you hit sent or leave that recorded message, you no longer own it and even coaches with the best intentions can inadvertently expose your communications.
