I firmly believe that we should always give more than we take. When working with volunteers, I recommend identifying what drives them and what they hope to achieve/learn from this experience. Most likely, they want exposure to certain areas and wish to build their technical capabilities. I would then provide a repository of resources tailored to their learning desires. It is win-win as with them upgrading their knowledge, they can also better contribute to the project leading to better project outcomes. In addition, I will maintain an open communication whereby they can ask me any questions and I'll answer to the best of my abilities. Lastly, a key thing is to not restrict the volunteers but to provide them with the freedom to explore.

Managing and engaging volunteers as technology evolves, while also capturing the attention of potential volunteers for projects, has become a significant challenge. To achieve greater engagement and participation, it is extremely relevant to provide opportunities for them to support decision-making processes and, importantly, to have the opportunity to give feedback. Humans like to feel important and need to feel part of what is happening, especially in the world of volunteering. Unlike paid work, volunteers are driven by purpose, and we need to strengthen this feeling.

To engage volunteers in green design, focus on creating networking opportunities that connect them with peers and professionals in the field. Facilitate access to resources, information, and opportunities that support their interests and career goals in green design. This approach fosters a sense of community, belonging, and growth, building lasting and positive relationships with volunteers.

Showing them tangible benefits to be gleaned from the design; engage the volunteers in an array of activities connected to the design that also coincidently provide health & wellbeing benefits; invite an intergenerational volunteer team so families, schools and nurseries can get involved; above all else, make it fun. Celebrate the little wins, the engagement from all (however small), praise all activity and publicise the involvement in local social media and/or national media platforms. In involving everyone from the earliest stage, the community will adopt and own the design and output well into the future.
