How can you engage a disinterested mentee in the mentoring process?

Before you can reengage the mentee, you first have to find out the true why of them becoming disengaged in the first place. Once that has been identified, the mentor should also reconnect the mentee to why they sought mentorship in the first place and the cost of inaction if they don't solve the root cause. Only then can the mentor guide the mentee to resolve the root cause together by viewing it as a puzzle to solve that moves the mentee closer to their desired goal(s) and avoids the cost of inaction.

A successful mentoring process requires mutual engagement and a genuine desire from the mentee to participate. When a mentee seems disinterested, it can be frustrating and challenging for the mentor. However, as a mentor it’s important to seek strategies you can use to rekindle their interest and participation, even if the process is mentee-led.

My perspective is somewhat different. The following is what I perceive 1. Talk about yourself as a monitor and ask whether you are the right fit in the first instance. The more you open up, the more the mentee feels at ease and fee to open up 2. Depending on the response, give examples where you have encountered similar situations and how you have dealt with them. In other words, take the burden of answering the why question from them and make them feel at ease by sharing your experience. This works for me every time

To engage a disinterested mentee, assist them in setting clear, realistic goals that resonate with their interests, needs, and aspirations. Goals impart a sense of direction, purpose, and achievement, fostering engagement. They also enable progress tracking and feedback. Utilize the SMART criteria—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—to enhance goal effectiveness. Regular goal reviews and celebrating milestones further motivate and involve the mentee. This approach not only helps in aligning their efforts with their personal and professional objectives but also strengthens their commitment to the mentoring process, making it more meaningful and rewarding for them.

The mentoring process shouldn’t come across as an extension of their job where they have deadlines that will be challenging to meet. Set one goal per meeting, not multiple goals, and space out the meetings to monthly so there is always ample time to complete the objective that you mutually agreed upon. Set the mentee up for success. You are not there to grade their accomplishments. You are there to provide feedback and share experiences.

Setting clear and realistic goals is more often than not a clean cut process. My take on this is that you need to take time to identify what the mentee's end game is and then work out which goals align with that. After that, prioritise the goals break them down into objectives, and create realistic timelines to achieve them.

Moreover, sharing real-life career experiences and fostering open dialogues with an exchange of viewpoints has consistently proven most effective in engaging mentees.

A good mentor should be able to use soft skills to know more about their mentee and adapt to their learning style. Some people prefers learning by attending online live sessions, other by listening to podcast, other to watch videos and others to read.

Engage the mentee by using variety. Book reading, podcasts, videos, etc. to name a few. Connect them to people in your network for topics that you may not have expertise in, as a mentor. Create bespoke methods to align to the mentees style and needs

Pick different settings. Offices can be boring and stifle creativity. Pick a common area with a couch, go for a walk if they are up for it. If there is interest in a role that the mentor oversees, add in that person that reports into the you to share their experiences. Mentoring doesn’t need to be confined to only 1:1’s.

Listen! Listen! Listen! that is the key to understand what is happening and why the disengagement. Mot importantly, listen not only to the spoken word but also most importantly to the UNSPOKEN words.

Be vulnerable - this can often be overlooked but in my experience when I have shown vulnerability and shared personal things with my mentee our trust has grown more quickly. Top tip: Ask your mentee is there anything they would like to share with you that would be helpful for you to be a better mentor to them.

The best way to re- engage your mentee is to share with them your intention to drive real change that makes people’s lives better. That’s also how we inspire trust.

Suggest they involve a coworker they are comfortable including. For some tasks, the mentor can also complete the exercise along with the mentee and then discuss the results during the next meeting. Ideally the tasks or goals can be achieved during the work day so it doesn’t feel like homework.

I always begin with initiating an open conversations with them. Acknowledge their achievements and their dynamic role in the team. Provide constructive feedback. Afterward, I establish clear goals by outlining expectations, responsibilities, and desired outcomes. Finally, regularly check in on their progress, address concerns promptly, and adapt the mentorship approach as needed.

The mentee needs to know that they are in a safe space with the mentor and needs to get that affirmation that he can be honest and can get valuable and frank feedback. I usually tell my mentees that they are currently in a non-judgemental safe space and that they are free to speak what they wish to without worrying about implications and actions

Motivation is a personal and individualised experience. Different mentees may respond to different strategies, so it is it must be tailored based on a kind of “trusted” friendship approach. - Set clear goals and point those out regularly - Provide guidance and support regularly is key - Celebrate and recognise achievements - Foster a positive and supportive environment by positive energy, feedback and mindset - Offer ideas for development. Recommend courses or even coaches - Be a role model: Lead by example and demonstrate the qualities and behaviours you want your mentee to emulate by examples - Encourage self - reflection and self-motivation - Be patient and supportive as it is a longterm approach with fluctuations and bumpy roads

A disengaged mentee? A mentor is a person who is looked for to support another in a situation that needs attention and help from other people's perspectives or experiences. That said, we mentors, should focus and help a mentee who really needs our help and who will truly benefit from our experience! To try to have a mentee more engaged is the task of the mentees themselves! If this is a corporate program and a mentor you asked to dedicate their time to the program needs also to engage the mentee, then this mentee needs coaching and not mentorship probably. First, the mentee has to be coached on self-awareness and understand why they need a mentor, then you engage mentors to give their time to a more mature co-worker!

There is a saying that goes, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink." As much as you want to be a mentor to those you know are talented and capable, this doesn't mean that these people are interested in your insight. Instead of spending your time on individuals who aren't interested in learning, focus on those hungry for knowledge and to learn more. Even if you don't think they have it in them, you might be pleasantly surprised when you give someone who wants it the chance they are looking for. Those are the best kinds of surprises to have.
