How can you engage disengaged students and prevent dropouts?

Know yourself. If you dont show how much you care about your students they wont care about what you know. Engagement comes through stories, connection and inspiration. Their dreams, aspirations and tying effort to results. Grit v quit...

I mostly use good humour while taking classroom sessions. Smile and laughter create a good environment and work as an icebreaker. Trainees start interacting, come up with their questions and provide suggestions once they start connecting with me.

In my experience, this issue happens when you encounter students with different backgrounds and language barriers which unconsciously decide to anticipate the disengagement. What can be done: 1- Culture Orientation 2-Group Interview to understand the reasons experiences, and challenges. 3-Language improvement classes. 4-Rapport Building I strongly believe all the students particularly international ones need to have a full orientation about the cultures and all challenges and shortcomings instead of a silver lining.

The first step here can be talking to the students who seem disinterested and to have an idea about what they are not being able to relate to. Their side of the story is as important as anything. In my experience, students lose interest if the topic suddenly shifts towards being too technical, while that is necessary at times, that too can be morphed into something relevant to them or conform to their intellectual skillsets. Not every student is alike in their skills but they should also be taught like that, sometimes extra sessions might be needed because the ultimate goal is not to let anyone feel left out or inferior to their peers.

Research shows that a learning environment with high expectations generally yields better learning outcomes than environments with no such expectations. However, it is important to also have realistic expectations of each student, depending on their own individual circumstance. In saying this, educators should clearly set out the expectations but don't overdo it. Expectations related to effort and kindness towards others are two I personally employ. I also believe educators should share the expectations they hold for themselves, as this shows learners that they are also going to hold themselves to the same high standards.

It's like drawing a treasure map, marking the path to success. By sharing what we hope to achieve, how to get there, and the rules of the journey, everyone knows the game plan. It's not just about saying what's needed; it's creating a blueprint for everyone to thrive and shine!

I lay down rules during my first interaction itself. Mobile usage is restricted during training sessions. People can leave the training room to attend to their calls or messages. Communicating standards and expectations in the beginning helps to create a smooth training flow for the coming days.

We all know the rationale of the potency of listening v telling v doing and where retention of knowledge is highest. Question: How do you give real life examples where you can provide situational questions and help build (with students) thinking references to get to the truth and develop real knowledge. Thats meaningful.

Exploring topics that matter, where every lesson feels like a piece of a bigger, meaningful picture. By diving into relevant and exciting lessons, learning becomes an exciting quest where every discovery counts!

Sharing stories, supporting each other, and celebrating our differences. By creating this caring space, our classroom becomes a tight-knit family where everyone feels like they truly belong and can be their awesome selves!

I keep track of my trainee's performance and progress. I provide necessary guidance to them to help them to remove their doubts and obstacles.

Checking in regularly, noticing when someone needs a hand, and stepping in to help out. By keeping watch and acting early, we ensure everyone's journey stays on track, making our learning adventure smooth and successful!

Visible signs of learning and micro success have been shown to significantly boost levels of self-efficacy and motivation. Successful learning experiences often serve to inspire disengaged learners. Engaging disengaged learners requires the strategic implementation of optimal challenges, especially ones that provide a series of micro successes along the way to completing the larger task. Additionally, tasks and learning activities should highlight the link between what is being learned and the learner's own context whenever possible. By doing so, educators can effectively bridge the gap and create meaningful connections with learners, especially in cases where the subject matter may not inherently resonate with them.

Cheering for each milestone, and then keeping the spirit alive by setting new goals. By celebrating our wins and staying motivated, we create a culture of success that keeps us soaring higher and reaching new heights together!

If you can provide proof of advancement, this develops belief in a student. Momentum is like the fuel of belief. Asking students, founders, team members what they see and what they will do next is often all it takes.

I congratulate my trainees for any complex they solve for me. I also provide them with opportunities to show their own unique style and skills in front of others which motivates them to learn with more enthusiasm.

I’ve spent a lot of time this year working with our students who are off-track. We (me and school counselor) met with them in rotations weekly. We used a goal-setting sheet. Looked at their grades and made them write them down (as well as their attendance). Identified supports and measurable goals. Ex. 1. You will go to academic tutoring 2 times next week for Algebra. 2. You will talk with your teacher about your missing assignments so they can be made up by Friday. We also printed out their assignment list in the grade book. We circle all the 0’s. They set at least 2 personal goals for themselves. We check in again and ask about progress. We talk with parents about how to help. We saw some good movement here!

Encouraging a shift toward creative content presentation redirects the focus from teaching "disengaged students" to teaching engaging and interesting lessons that inspire learners to engage. This approach to education advocates for the ongoing need for self-reflection within the teaching profession.

Having spent a lot of my career working with students who don’t see the point of school, engaging them takes work and time. For teachers being allowed to move away from the standard curriculum is essential as for some students that will never engage. Building a relationship with the student is vital in the learning process as a learner needs to feel safe enough to take risks and get things wrong, without this very little learning happens. This takes time and doesn’t live within a standard curriculum, it lives in doing other things to build trust so that there is a safe space for learning to happen. All this takes time and thinking beyond the norm to engage disaffected students.

One thing I have found essential is to build relationships with your students. I alloted them leadership roles like that of the Class Monitor, so that they learn to lead by example and assume a role of responsibility. I also involved them in co- curricular activities, in which they won laurels for the school and basked in self esteem. MY 3 Mantras are...
