In my experience, one-on-one check-ins to discuss any concerns or ideas related to diversity and inclusion have proven to be effective. Finally, celebrating differences in the context of cultural traditions and practices can have a significant impact.

Remembering to use non biased methods while gathering information and working on a resolution is important. All team members should have a safe place to voice workplace issues; and they should feel a resolution is being worked on.

If something is raised, it should be addressed as it clearly matters to that individual. This also doesn't paint the picture of how many may be suffering with it in silence. Summarise they key points and address them, you may need to get other stakeholder engagement to do this. Present the case to them effectively. Take time to communicate either with the individual who raised the issue and maybe the wider team. This helps them stay engaged, demonstrates points are taken seriously, and may raise awareness of issues that need to be considered at a wider level.

In addition to fostering open communication, consider implementing mentorship programs, diversity training, and establishing resource groups to further support diversity and inclusion initiatives. Sharing success stories or best practices within the team can inspire positive change. We/I must encourage them to talk about their "lived experience" D&I has to be personal, there is so much to share and acknowledging that we do, is a good start. I also realise that I must stop defending and instead ask for more information. I also have learnt that " I can walk away without losing "my humanity" (I heard this from someone else) Give people the opportunity by letting them have a seat at all tables, even if you need to move back a bit or a lot. Currently today’s 5-generation workforce, (with Gen Z dominating from 2024) provides a pivotal moment to appreciate differences and share knowledge. Companies owe it to their own advancement to invest in DEI best practices, and better partner with our educational institutions. I believe that one way to create awareness of diversity and foster greater inclusivity is to be aware of and acknowledge a variety of upcoming religious and cultural holidays. When closing out a team call or meeting, if the audience isn’t too large, ask how team members what their plans are to celebrate the holiday. Use your company’s intranet to help employees become aware of and keep track of multicultural religious or holiday celebrations. Be respectful of these days when scheduling meetings, and appreciate that employees have different needs that may require flexibility.
