The #1 key to "Intelligent" risk taking as a startup?...have a well thought out contingency plan. What really impresses an investor is the founder/CEOs ability to address issues that don't go according to plan (which 100% of the time happens). I've always recommended a startup have 2 strategic plans (e.g., business plans). 1 that applies to the current market conditions and 1 that applies to the "realistic clouds" market conditions. Whichever the Founder/CEO prioritizes doesn't really matter...as long as there's a methodical analysis of how either plan will be executed. A startup that hasn't thought about contingencies...is one that is not investible in my opinion.
