Lean ownership among employees can be encouraged by getting their buy in. The best way to do that is involving employees in a kaizen event and making them a part of the solution. Also explaining why a certain process is being changed and most importantly answering a question “What’s in it for me”. Any lean project should have 2 goals one is to improve the process itself and second is to make employee’s jobs easier.

Work smarter not harder is the key message to get across, explain the benefits in terms of client retention, onboarding of new clients, job security, improved process, automation, error reduction, removal of bottlenecks and frustration. Business need to differentiate from their competitors and to do so you need your people to embrace the lean journey.

Lean method comprises two guiding tenets: continuous improvement and respect for people. 1. Compress the levels of supervision and decision making consistent with knowhow and risk/reward. 2. Empower employees with knowledge, encourage them to collaborate, springboard and teamwork. 3. Stimulate creative learning, problem solving, learning from own and others' mistakes and continuously improving. 4. Teach employees how to macro and micro evaluate/manage/control challenges/opportunities and uncertainty. 5. Create a healthy competitive environment where employees can be quality-productive, positive thinkers/doers/influencers to those around them. 6. Reward them and allow them to grow and act responsibly as if the company were their own.

A key step that is missed in this empowering employees is the involvement of the shop floor workers. TOO MANY companies miss this step. I have not been in manufacturing for some time, but I am a coach and, if I may, coaching with a strategic theme works in every aspect. People are instructed to coach the theme of increasing LEAN ownership and then managers / coaches release everyones potenital by collaborating with them on solutions and allowing people to own / have skin in the game for the way they will work and implement LEAN. The key is not to teach but to empower the person to create the solution.

In business we are all in it together. There should be no barriers, no them or us. Through recognising, encouraging, and rewarding individuals strengths, weaknesses, skills, abilities, and capabilities. Listening to and valuing opinions. Don’t implement improvement initiatives and this this is only for the management. Effective improvement initiatives work when it total management control (TQM) Everyone is working together.
