How can you encourage employees to share their process safety knowledge and experience with others?

The organization can give some recognition to the employee / experts (not cash or gift but something invaluable). There must be some motivation behind any behavior, hence it is must that the organization understand and motivate the employee. Moreover, the environment of the organization plays a vital role to motivate employees to share their expertise. Hence, build the environment in a way to affect positively for everyone either contributor or seeker.

I think, By creating an atmosphere of trust, businesses can ensure that employees are comfortable speaking up and sharing their process safety knowledge and experience. To ensure this, businesses should consider implementing a process safety culture code that includes clear expectations and guidelines. Process safety culture codes should focus on creating a safe and open environment for employees to be heard and respected. They should also be non-hierarchical, meaning that all employees’ opinions should be valued and taken into consideration. Also businesses should establish processes for reporting issues and concerns relating to process safety.

In addition to the above, there should be a culture that builds trust between people. Employees have trust that managers will act morally to promote process safety. Managers have trust in staff members to take ownership for their work and to swiftly report any issues or concerns. Mutual trust notwithstanding, people are open to have others check or evaluate their performance in relation to critical tasks or activities that have an impact on process safety risks.

One thing I have found helpful is to publish the employees innovation/ contribution in the house magazine. They may be encouraged to prepare and present their contribution in industry seminars eyc

People want to relax, relaxing means they do not want to system and process to break down. Process safety must be informed to the people who trained them and they practice it accordingly. Also, they need motivation and appreciation during work which is why they pay more attention to process operations and maintenance. They need to be updated as systems upgrade. Need to increase learning attention of system and process.

Establishing 'near-miss' reporting systems with a blame-free culture encourages open knowledge sharing on safety hazards, fostering transparency, trust, and incident prevention. However, I disagree with relying solely on formal presentations, which can silence those less comfortable speaking up. Implementing anonymous suggestion boxes or online forums widens participation and captures valuable insights. An example I've seen is a plant initiating a 'Safety Champion' program. Experienced workers mentored new hires, sharing best practices through on-the-job coaching. This peer-to-peer learning environment not only boosted safety awareness but also created a culture of continuous improvement.
