How can you encourage cross-team collaboration while meeting deadlines?

I remember a case in an Eastern European city, health clinics were baffled by sporadic increases in Hepatitis A cases. The beans were found to have Hepatitis A exposure after roasting. Hence individuals in the chain of preparation were the prime suspects. After testing it was found that 20% of the workforce in a few establishments have contracted hepatitis A. The health department with the food safety board, set clear goals and expectations for cafes and screening for employees (baristas). Result: Clear objectives lead to cooperation from cafes and efficient control of Hepatitis A rise. Lesson: Communicating clear objectives ensures stakeholders align for communal health and safety.

Setting clear goals and expectations to objectively define the scope ,objectives and deliverables of the project. Once we know this, we can encourage cross team collaborations which is accompanied with meeting deadlines of the project without compromising the quality of our projects.

Building trust and rapport is the cornerstone of any collaboration. We can build trust among the team members by creating different social events like parties and by arranging different seminars, meetings and conferences. This way the team members can interact with each other well and have built their trust.

Encouraging consistent feedback paired with recognition can solidify cross-team collaboration and improved results and stronger team dynamics. In addition feedback needs to be constructive and provide added value for the receiver. Open communication and genuine recognition turns a group of individuals into a unified force. I remember a project with two teams who competed fiercely. While one often stumbled due to lack of communication, the other thrived on regular feedback. They celebrated even minor successes.

Almost always diversity and pooling expertise elevate results. As an example i remember from one of my projects where teams A and B battled a pivotal project. Team A followed the usual playbook, while Team B, led by a senior colleague, was a blend of diverse talents. He ensured everyone's voice echoed in their strategy. Of the coding techniques expert or unique design insights of others often took center stage. Cross-mentoring became Team B’s edge, with seasoned Leaders guiding newcomers. By the deadline, Team A's work was sufficient, but Team B's, infused with diverse insights, was world class.

In my experience, true collaboration cannot occur if there's inadequate understanding of the motivations, needs, risks, and challenges individual teams (and its members) face. Understanding these elements allows a team to align their goals with those of other teams and the organization at large, fostering a collaborative culture. It creates empathy and a shared sense of purpose, consideration, even caring for each others. The leader plays a crucial role in this process, creating a conducive environment that promotes learning, openness, and mutual respect among teams.
