Grammar is an essential component of any language, but it can also be one of the most challenging and boring topics for young English learners. How can you make grammar teaching more effective, engaging, and fun for your students? Here are some tips and strategies based on linguistic principles and pedagogical practices.
One way to introduce and practice grammar is to use authentic texts that are relevant, interesting, and meaningful for your students. Authentic texts are texts that are written or spoken by native or fluent speakers of English for a real purpose and audience, such as stories, songs, poems, articles, or dialogues. They can expose your students to natural and varied language use, and provide them with rich and contextualized examples of grammar in action. You can select texts that match your students' level, interests, and goals, and design activities that focus on specific grammar points, such as identifying, analyzing, or producing them.
In my personal encounter with learning grammar rules, the best way to teach young learners is to make them read and write compositions about themselves, family or school. Then engage them in games.

Although a former ESL/TESOL teacher, I still have ideas! A good way of presenting grammar sentences would be in the form of a game. Have strips of paper each with an action verb ready. Split the class into 3-6 groups depending on class size. A person from one group reads the verb and mimes it to team mates. The group has to verbally respond with a correct grammar sentence within a limited time whilst competing groups write down the answer to steal points. Groups take turns to allocate a team mate to mime in turn. This would work well for identifying gaps in grammar knowledge for the Present Continuous tense for instance. Creating class competition helps to drive motivation for learning grammar which can otherwise become boring.
I often like to use funny examples for my students to clearly see the difference between correct and incorrect. For example, "Let's eat Grandma" vs "Let's eat, Grandma" tends to make my students laugh. But really, keeping the pressure low and keeping a positive environment is key.
A third way to teach grammar is to integrate it with the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This can help your students see the connection between grammar and communication, and apply their grammar knowledge in meaningful and purposeful contexts. Grammar is like a seed of English .Therefore, lot of emphasis should be put on learning the rules to the T, comparing between sub categories and then applying those rules for various writing types such as an essay, letter, report , journaling , comprehension etc.

Children are active and intrinsically motivated when they play, and they often don't even realize that they are learning. For example playing shop helps young learners practice food/drink vocabulary, money and counting, as well as grammar and sentences related to buying and selling ("I would like to by X", "I need Y" etc.).

You can also vary the amount and type of feedback and correction according to your students' level, goals, and expectations.
Grammar teaching can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for both you and your students, if you use the right methods and strategies. By using authentic texts, teaching grammar inductively, integrating grammar with skills, using games and activities, and providing feedback and correction, you can help your students learn grammar effectively and have fun at the same time.
When teaching grammar, I never force anyone to start using the new skill immediately. Each individual needs their own pace and different approach. That's why it is important to use a variety of examples and methods.
Sentence Construction After teaching the grammar item and providing examples, ask your students to orally construct their own sentences. This gives learners the opportunity to put their thoughts together and produce correct sentences using the structure taught. Provide immediate feedback on incorrect sentences.
Remember that grammar should not be a goal in itself. Focus on functional grammar that will allow your students to communicate successfully. Some students may not be ready to acquire a new grammar structure, but providing examples and short focus-on-form activities can raise awareness and prepare young learners to produce accurate forms fluently when they are ready.
Listen to them and encourage them to speak incorrectly , but speak nonetheless . Gain their confidence and boost theirs - hug them and let them know you care . Teach them grammar and about life.
