How can you effectively persuade employees to adopt new workplace policies?

Any new workplace policies should be discussed and agreed with the trade unions or staff representatives. When in agreement, there will still be details that employees would like to discuss, usually the practical implementation of the policies decided. Focus on these, and how employees can be active in the next phase of decision-making.

To make employees adopt new workplace policies: Communication work starts before the policy is finalized and not just pushing the policy. Do a dry run with a select group of employees across all levels to see the reaction and implement valid feedback to improve the policy. Invite employees who are willing to be part of dry run to help improve the policy. Being transparent this way gets employee buy-in even before implementing the policy.

Having employee engagement sessions or interactions at frequent intervals, probably on a monthly basis would help an organization in getting their employees engaged in new work place policies. An organization has to ensure that work place policies aren't conveyed through informal channels, as this could very well lead to the employees not taking the Policies on a serious note. To overcome this impediment, it is always advisable when work place policies are conveyed to the staff by the top management, followed by a team session wherein employees are asked for their feedback or their understanding of the proposed policies to be followed. This would help overcome any resistance from employees in execution of the proposed policies.

Understanding your audience is pivotal. Selling any change hinges on this awareness. Yet, the crucial first step is comprehending the 'why' behind the change. Do you genuinely seek change or are you influenced by a management book's ideals? Define your goals for your company, team, or department. Why the change? Before addressing your audience, lead by doing—setting a compelling example. Actions speak louder. Then, engage with your audience. Understanding them is vital, but leading by example is the linchpin for impactful change.

Aside from explaining why a management team/ team leader/ department lead looks into changing workplace policies, I would try to involve team members as early as possible. The more each team member is involved and feels part of the change, the easier new policies will be complied with. Naturally some changes may need to be implemented and may not be seen as positive straight away but early involvement can be key. Depending on the company structure and size, there may also be opportunities to create problem-based workshops that could bring up new policies which then have been co-created by teams in the company.

The WHY’s are very important! Focus on opportunities, incentives, benefits. Express the outcomes simple and clear, so that everyone will understand.

Objections signify engagement. People care about the future and how changes impact them and the company. Engage actively and listen, truly listen. Objections often harbor excellent suggestions for making changes more effective. Every objection is an opportunity to enhance the change process. Embrace objections as avenues to refine and optimize the change for better outcomes.

Walk the talk! Be a model yourself and put into practice all the policies. Use all the platforms and channels available. The others will surely follow!

Follow-up reigns supreme in my book. Countless changes in organizations are hyped up, only to fizzle out later. Lack of managerial follow-through, absent exemplary behavior, no team dialogues, and crucial outcomes missing in performance reviews—what's the point without follow-up? Change begins with yourself. By consistently following up, showcasing commitment to set goals and vision, you pave the way for smoother, more impactful future changes.

Public Recognition: Applaud employees publicly, such as at team or company-wide meetings, for their successful adaptation to new policies. 2. Personal Thanks: Managers or supervisors can offer sincere personal acknowledgments of an employee's effort and adaptability to make them feel valued. 3. Progress Opportunities: Successful adoption of the new policy can result in extra progress opportunities, like promotions or professional development. 4. Encourage Peer Recognition: Platforms can be created for peers to acknowledge and appreciate each other's efforts in adapting to new policies.
