How can you effectively network in a virtual environment?

We likely won’t get to chose the platform we are using at ‘virtual networking events’, likely organized by groups and associations. So you need to plan ahead - check out the meeting details beforehand as some conferences and events use online platforms that have the option of creating profiles, pre/loading your business information, and pre event networking options and questions with a leader board of those accumulating the most points for participation.

Proactive communication: It's knowing HOW to ask and ENGAGE are critical skills in today's work environment. It's also a highly coveted soft-skill because it includes mastery of all forms of communication - verbal, non-verbal and written. This is something I coach many professionals on, particularly during interviews. Someone with proactive communication style will always be perceived (at least in my experience) as a person with leadership abilities and/or potential. It's closely tied to confidence, the ability to influence, and lead.

Networking at an online event can be challenging if the platform used has limited options for connecting. If on Zoom, you may have the option to direct message other participants. So be active in the chat, and watch for people posting - reply or comment publicly in the chat, and then direct message them to thank them for their perspective, suggest a resource, or to highlight an interest you have in common and ask if you can connect outside the event.

From my experience, identifying the specific types of people you aim to connect with is crucial to optimize your time. The better you understand your audience, the more precise and effective your communication will be. This prior research and understanding make forming connections smoother and more impactful.

Effectively networking online requires understanding your value proposition. What do you bring to the table? Who do you help and on what? The more specific you are, the clearer the message, the better you can communicate and demonstrate your value and standout. Doing the above will naturally help you focus on important topics relevant to the network you have or the one you want to build. What you represent will be consistent across all your professional brand, including your CV, Linkedin, networking and communication.

My number 1 rule in networking is to consistently add value. By thoroughly preparing and approaching networking with the mindset of contributing value to your connections, you are likely to leave a lasting impression. Prioritizing the needs and interests of your connections fosters stronger, more meaningful relationships and ensures a more memorable impact.

From my experience most people are open to receiving messages and connection requests here on LinkedIn after ‘meeting’ or see the others name at an online conference or learning event. A quick message saying “Hello, I saw you the recent Board of Trade event, and then share something relevant like: “I appreciated your comment about…” “my key take away was…” , and then asking they would like to connect. In my opinion, never send a generic connection request without a message, unless you have an established relationship. Otherwise it’s like walking around a meeting room handing out business cards without saying anything or introducing yourself.

ALWAYS FOLLOW-UP. Start with sending a "Thank You" note after the call / virtual networking. I don't care if you already said it 20x. True appreciation and respect need to be demonstrated not simply said. I can't even tell you how many people ask for advise, for help, request for informational interviews, only to hang-up after the call and never be heard from again. Worse, it's followed by another ask. Remember, no one owes anyone anything. The least one can do is to follow-up with a 'thank you' note, and offer a way to support and help your new connection. Do check-ins or updates from time to time. This is how you build strong connections. You have to care and think about the other person, not simply as mean to get what you need.
