Totally agree ,it is about being clear . Defining clear objectives,reading and understanding the person specification and job role on a day to day basis. I like to do a check - in on a weekly basis to discuss one aspect of the role . Then every 6 weeks we sit down and do a discussion about what is going well and what needs to improve. This also builds trust and open communication which is so important in the working relationship.

One thing I find very helpful is the involvement of employees and stakeholders in the evaluation process. This creates an environment where thoughts, processes and plans all come to the forefront. Stakeholders also get an opportunity to get to know the employees ,notice ones to progress and creates ease within future meetings and projects.

4 Provide regular and constructive feedback

Feedback is an essential component of any performance measurement system. It helps your employees to understand their strengths and weaknesses, to recognize their achievements and challenges, and to identify their areas of improvement and development. Feedback is essential for growth , identifying gaps and allows for avoidance of the same thing reoccurring. The importance is to take the feedback as it is and not feel criticised ,this can create a culture of fear to be open and honest in the future ,when in turn creates stagnation, lack of interest and can demotivate the staff team.

Sales people respect what you inspect- set clear objectives and targets and continually monitor progress. Praise, motivate and give affirmation constantly (this builds confidence.) For those struggling act fast. Coach, joint call, train and encourage. If that doesn’t work exit failures fast!

Most of what has been shared is relevant. I think people start with the best intention and these metrics eventually become a tick box exercise. Perhaps employees should be given feedback /measured on every major project. And off course feedback on attitude, learning orientation, willingness , team engagement etc ...those are critical skills over and above job competencies.
