How can you effectively influence your superiors?

To effectively influence your supervisor, align your goals with theirs, showcase your expertise, and consistently deliver high-quality work. Clearly communicate the benefits of your proposals in relation to the overall objectives of the organization. Build a positive and collaborative relationship by actively listening to your supervisor's priorities and concerns. Additionally, demonstrate initiative, take on responsibilities, and propose solutions that contribute to the success of the team. Building trust and showcasing your value through actions will enhance your influence with your supervisor.

To effectively influence your superiors, focus on building trust through consistent delivery of high-quality work and demonstrating reliability. Clearly communicate your ideas and suggestions, aligning them with the organization's goals. Show initiative by seeking additional responsibilities and proposing solutions to challenges. Additionally, understand your superiors' priorities and viewpoints to tailor your approach, and seek opportunities to contribute valuable insights while respecting their input and decisions.

I'd start by answering several questions: 1. What are their current priorities? 2. What are their current challenges? 3. What is their view on hierarchy? 4. What is their communication style (direct/indirect)? 5. What is your relationship with that person? Do you know each other well or is this your first encounter? 6. What's their level of influence over you? If you want to be successful in influencing anyone, you want to understand their way of thinking, understand how they react to any feedback, and also adjust your language to theirs.

Often times a I’ve noticed a superior is responding differently based on input from the room or myself. I’ve noticed the more I absorb their feedback or input, and deciding when to approach a topic based on the mood at the moment - the more successful I’ve become. Example a new change is being rolled out - the room is pushing back, sometimes I purposefully suppress my true feelings/ thoughts to distract the room and open the dialogue. I don’t view my actions as a rescue for the leader…the spirit of my input is to keep the conversations going. Hasn’t always been successful- but when it is the leader is viewed as a success by having open communication on the topic.

When approaching a superior with an idea, need, suggestion or complaint, it’s essential that you understand your audience. Knowledge about your bosses habits/moods can go a long way in knowing when and how to approach them. Is it best to casually bring it up over coffee in the break room and then suggest a meeting? Or is it best to schedule a meeting with them at their convenience with a brief note on the context? When presenting the idea, the order in which you present your information is also about timing. It’s best to make sure you have prepared how and in what order you present the information. Keep it positive and clear about how and why it is important to the company and possibly even how it might benefit them personally.

Here are few steps that you can follows: 1.Showcase your goals and expertise with them so that they can listen and understand. 2. Build your relation in such a manner that you can easily demonstrate how you are going to execute 3. What are your vision and mission in contributing success with the team and how are you taking team ahead.

The influence you have with your superiors is tied to the quality of relationships you have with them. I’d encourage people to be proactive and seek out opportunities to connect with them, not just when you need something from them. Getting to know them will help you get to know them as a person and understand what’s important to them. This not only builds your credibility but helps you personalize your asks when you need their support. Granted, you may not always be able to directly build relationships with them, but there are people on their circles you can also focus on. This is wise even if you have a relationship since there may be times you need the added support of their social circle to get through to them.

A few years ago, I was quite elated to be part of a group trained by leadership guru @ Dr Herta Von Stiegel in one of her leadership boot camps. One profound message that I gleaned from Dr Von Stiegel’s training was that, “Leadership is influence.” I am a firm believer that building strong and authentic relationships build upon, integrity and trust will influence those around you. Competence cannot be faked. Hence, demonstrating competence, being receptive to feedback and articulating organisation’s goals will influence those around you in the long run. What are your thoughts?

I would say follow the 3 Cs - Consistency ( be predictable, walk the talk), Commitment ( express an intention of a common objective, be open and transparent in your communication, show due consideration for their feelings and interests), Capability ( demonstrate the abilities and skills to get the job done and produce results).
