Never lead with an ask or a pitch. Always start out with being of value. The more valuable you become to an investor, the more they will seek to find ways to work with you. I did this effectively for a big four accounting firm and a leading law firm.

I worked in private equity for many years. A genuine authentic follow up email is the best. During the conversation see if you picked up some nuggets. The website will also often show the deals the partner has worked on. Between the conversation and this research, see if you can talk about something relevant in today’s markets. Possibly an idea? But as the article says, don’t be pushy or salesy. Be genuine. Even admit if you see something but don’t understand. Give it your best shot. Ask friends, alumni who are in private equity and run your idea by them. And state what you did and ask for feedback in the follow up email.

2 Keep in touch and add value

The second step is to maintain regular contact with your network, and provide value to them. This means checking in every few weeks or months, depending on the level of rapport you have, and sharing useful information, insights, or opportunities. Of these I would not share an update about career progress. That doesn’t help the person you are courting. Follow up with what would help them. A relevant idea. But think it through. It’s obvious when one is just sending something for the sake of maintaining contact. Put effort into researching an idea.
