How can you effectively engage community members unfamiliar with your organization?

Inclusion, inclusion, inclusion - Many times individuals outside the target audience will identify with the community effort on a personal level and engage. Practice inclusion. Embrace the opportunity to learn from them and the opportunity to educate a greater audience.

True, true! Trust= time + consistency. Follow through is everything, otherwise it’s just words .

In my experience, find a way to leverage existing relationships to vet your organization to the community members who are unfamiliar with your organization. Perform some form of needs assessment targeting your community. Be sure that you identify what sets you apart from other organizations. Tailor your approach to the needs of your audience in a specific and detailed way. Ensure the individuals communicating the issues and needs are vested in the bottom line. Once you have established partnerships, you can attend community events and create a presence on social media. Build meaningful sustainable relationships with key stakeholders in that community.

It is important to build trust, especially reaching into a new community. Start by connecting with leaders or organizations. Listen to their challenges and goals. Partner to create something that benefits everyone. Once you have identified some common goals, you need clear messaging and delivery. Whether it is a person to person strategy, social media, or broader campaign, meet people where they are and invite them to join your effort. When new audiences start participating, be sure to create a welcoming environment. Keep listening and be open to change. You may not get it right the first time, but if you accept criticism and make improvements, that will build trust. Your new audience will return and bring their friends.

Before any of the questions listed here, I would start with "how does our organization help the community members we are trying to engage" or "what problem does the community have that our organization solves?" If it turns out you are a solution in search of a problem, you are going to have a difficult time engaging. You must be relevant before you can be engaging.

Decide on methods that play to the strength of your organization. Using powerful images and videos to show how your organization resonates with the community is good. Having focus groups targeting specific topics and having members speak regarding their independent roles around that topic is good. That method allows each person to participate. Newsletters, flyers, and word of mouth are all good. The trick here is meaningful engagement. We want the support and partnerships created from our communication channels to become viable partnerships.

In my opinion there is no silver bullet to win it all. It is rather a combination of many initiatives across multiple channels and using multiple methods. This can be highly individual. So it is mix and match for a lot of us out there.

The biggest advice here is to not be afraid of your current product.. share it with the world,.. people whom understand the product and resonate with the solution it brings. They will be naturally happy to contribute to its success. Lastly does it build upon your brand story and thus, early members of your community will remember this history, as such, should you reward them for that! ??

Keep track how different members stumble upon your Community. What's the #1 channel driving new sign-ups from members who are not familiar with the Community? Answer this traffic question and see what's your presence in the channel driving that traffic - and start working on your messaging and sign up hooks. It's a good idea to mix different channels in order to boost sign-ups, but always be: 1. Strategic about it - only the sun shines on all of us. Choose your channels based of results not vanity. 2. Mindful of your messaging - different channels come with different formats and tone of voice. 3. Tracking everything as much as possible - numbers are your best friend. Set KPIs for and measure for all touch points. Knowledge is power.

While building à community listening to other people becomes a key aspect, giving everyone a sense of belonging and attaining their trust is what truly matters. Share your clear vision with everyone and ask for à feedback, this really helps is building connections and understanding.

Be seen, be seen often and listen to people. Find out what people actually want, what they can do and what they are capable of doing. People are often their best own resource but may need a hand here and there. Also find out who can help, what extra help may be needed and support along the day by doing with, not doing for.

Engage in meaningful conversations, actively listen to the community members, and demonstrate genuine interest in understanding their needs. Building trust and credibility takes time and requires consistent efforts to communicate and interact with the community. And it needs to be 100% honest as people will sniff fake right away.

One of the best ways to develop relationships and trust is to listen, follow up and hold each other accountable. Most people want to contribute in one way or another. As you get to know them, make suggestions about how they might contribute to reaching aligned vision and mutually shared goals. Sometimes its a very simple idea or task. And sometimes its those who who develop leadership skills you never would have thought they had, when you find that simple starting point.

In my experience, offering a sustainable, rewarding service that helps solve a problem and reduce or improve situations is paramount. This empowers the future of your relationship within the community. The partnerships established should be resourceful for each party. As you were establishing, communicating, and sharing your organization, you should have identified supports from which you could also benefit. By providing value, you extended the shelf life of your organization's mission.

Ask, Offer, Add. A lesson I recently relearned through engagement with a funder is one of the most powerful questions you can ask is “What do you need?”. When engaging with potential new partners, first ask them what they need. From here you can be strategic and thoughtful about aligning your offer, invitations and opportunities with their primary needs; positioning you and the relationship as a potential add value to the person, organization and their ecosystem.

Gamification is essential. It's important to have a clear system in place within your community to recognise and differentiate members based on their input and value. This not only fosters a sense of achievement but also encourages members to climb the community ladder, as they see a future in the product you're building and anticipate rewards for their contributions. In today's digital age, there are numerous platforms for building and engaging communities, like Discord and Telegram, along with emerging new players. Research is key in choosing your platform. Opting for one that is already popular among your target audience will undoubtedly work in your favor, enhancing engagement and growth.

Find the Win/Win scenario where members are happy and engaged and you are actually providing value for your Community and business. New members join the Commnity for several reasons - they might need more personal customer support, they are curious to learn more about your product or service, or they are industry leaders looking to expand their network. Or something completely different. Be mindful about these nuances and create a reward system based on different profiles. Example: 1. Member in need of customer support - offer content and ways to get in touch with you or other members with similar inexperience. 2. Industry leaders or highly engaged members - invite them as webinar speakers, or find other ways to give them recognition.

This not only brings your community closer but also garners appreciation for your brand and personal efforts in creating an inclusive space. Collaboration and co-creation are important approaches in community. However not many know how to do so, as we do not have enough experience with collaboration and co-creation. We talk about it a lot, but not many might have truly experienced what collaboration and co-creation is. So we might need to acknowledge that this is a journey of discovery to walk the path together, and adjust and tweak along the way, as we move as a community.

*Hold Inception Meeting with Key Stakeholders To effectively engage a community you are unfamiliar with, to me, the first entry would be to go through community or local leaders. The first people to either embrace or reject an idea are the local leaders. These are; religious, cultural, political and opinion leaders. So, fully engage them before your entry into the community. Organize a one day Inception Meeting where you would invite key stakeholders to engage with. Make sure you have invited local government representatives of the area as well. From the meeting, you would introduce your idea or project or plan, open the session for discussions, and then later derive the action plan together. In that way, your idea would be embraced

It’s so important to get out into the community. Walk through the community, bring info about your organization. Talk to folks, visit corner stores,barber shops, salons, churches, businesses. Face to face is the best way to get your message across !!

I think it is all about honesty, consistency and sensivity. And all other pieces will fall into place. If you come with fake, people will sniff this out.

The role of servant leadership today is to connect those who “have,” with those who “don’t.” This is done by building, “Crossable Bridges.” Incremental actions people can take to grow in equitable relationship. A bridge is crossable when an average person can say, “I could do that.” For example, if you say “help impoverished children,” the average person would say, “I wouldn’t know where to start…” But if you say, “Color in this book with a child,” most people will say, “Well, I can do that…” Once relationship is formed, people will want to do more.

To effectively engage community members who are unfamiliar with one's organization requires a strategic and inclusive approach, it is therefore essential to conduct thorough research and gain a deep understanding of the community's demographics, interests, and concerns. This knowledge will enable the individual to tailor his or her message and initiatives to resonate with the community's specific needs. Again, one can achieve an effective engagement by building strong relationships with influential individuals and organizations and also collaborating and or sponsoring local events within the community which helps in gaining trust and credibility.

Above all, people join Communities to feel included. It's up to Community managers to build experiences that foster relationships, and create a strong feeling of belonging among members. New Commnity members' experience should be free of hurdles and full of "Aha!" moments.
