1 Know your audience

Before you present your design decisions, it is essential to understand who you are talking to and what they care about. Different audiences may have different goals, expectations, and levels of familiarity with your product. For instance, a business stakeholder may prioritize return on investment while a user may be more focused on usability and functionality. To ensure your communication is tailored to your audience, research their background, needs, and pain points. Use language and terminology that they can understand and relate to. Highlight the benefits and value of your design decisions for them. Anticipate and address their questions and objections.

High management will always focus on the money flow and in this process may lose focus on the long-therm goal: user satisfaction. Being the best at something always pays off. This happened to our company too, wanted cutting edge effects and animations, with a fresh look on our application without thinking about the stuff under the hood. The result? A waaay cooler application full of bugs. What's the next step? Investors are happy but the clients will suffer. With fast decisions come fast problems. The way I approached it was going to upper management and exposing the reality. Luckily, my new architectural approach was accepted and we could launch an improved version very soon, but even if it gets denied, the results will speak for you.

2 Use storytelling

3 Explain your process

Communicating your design decisions can be done by explaining the process and how you arrived at your solution. Doing so can demonstrate your rationale and logic, show how you followed best practices and principles of user interface design, incorporate user feedback and testing into your design iterations, and consider alternative solutions and trade-offs. To explain your process, you should use a clear and structured format, such as a design brief, a design document, or a presentation. Additionally, diagrams like flowcharts, sitemaps, or user flows can be used to show the structure and navigation of your design. Annotations like labels, notes, or comments can be used to highlight key features and functions of your design. Comparisons like before-and-after or side-by-side can also be used to show the improvements and changes of your design.

Usually with each UX change you are going to split the room, some will like it, some won't. Most of the time the other developers will reject your idea just because is more work. Flowcharts are amazing and come very handy, and afterwards you can use them in your documentation files. Put yourself in the shoes of a regular user, use articulated and logic points and try to create a precise picture of improvements for the ones around you. Do not act like your approach is flaw-less, point out the cons with a sincere rationale. Be open to feedback and answer questions. Explain yourself and allow others to enhance your idea.

4 Be confident and open

Finally, to communicate your design decisions effectively, you need to be confident and open. To demonstrate your trust in your skills and expertise, as well as willingness to listen and learn from others, you should prepare and practice your presentation or pitch. Utilize a positive and assertive tone and body language, acknowledge your sources and inspirations, invite feedback and suggestions from your audience, and be respectful and constructive when responding to criticism or questions.

No matter your job title or years of experience, you have a valid point of view. This doesn’t mean that you are the single truth holder, but you are a truth holder nonetheless. Your perspective is valid and important, and you should communicate it with conviction. If you need to hype yourself up before pitching, try using music while you practice key inflection points. Treat your own narrative like a movie to increase the emotion in your delivery. Once you have said your piece, shift your focus to listening. How might you be wrong? What information are you missing? Remember, being contradicted does not invalidate your point of view and doesn’t mean you should feel bad. Gain perspective and conviction with feedback!
