Technical dry runs are just as important as content dry runs and should be incorporated in the pre-event timeline. I’ve done an all virtual conference for 70+ speakers around the world and the key to success was having them get in the platform (backstage and main stage) prior to the event to feel comfortable with event day operations. It was the technical dry run where we tested internet connections, audio and video feeds, and provided tips for event day login. This resulted in a nearly flawless execution during the event.

You’ve lived it, you know it, you share these experiences often in the daily course of your career. Anything short of that, I say wait until your truly ready so you don’t waste everyone’s time. You’ll regret that, as you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. Especially when it’s recorded and lives online, forever!

My personal pet peeve is when someone throws a great event but the follow-up gets lost in the plan. Send the follow-up questionnaire, ask for feedback and make sure to do it in a timely fashion. Not afterwards or send 3 (what could be looked at as) duplicate emails… Put a easy streamlined system together and make people feel like they got value out of the session. My events have mainly been for government organizations, where speakers are dedicating their own time (and not getting financial compensated). The best projects I’ve worked on is when you are a part of a high performing team. There is clear communication, roles are well defined, people feel secure enough to speak out, there is a proper project management process being followed. With live streaming, the tech is important but the people and processes are as well. It needs everyone to be disciplined, tasks need to be completed on time, risks need to be called out. However the reward is worth it and ask anyone who works in live - we love the pressure and the adrenaline… we love live !
