How can you effectively answer questions about your previous job experience in an interview?

The most accurate predictor of future performance is past performance in a similar situation. By using behavior-based questions, the employer is seeking to understand how you handled situations in the past and compare your reactions to how they would want their employee to react. One way to make sure you answer the question completely is to use the STAR Method: Situation: Where did you work, when did you work there, what you were doing, and what was the situation? Task: What did you want to accomplish, your goal or responsibility? Action: What steps did you take? How did you know to take them? Why did you make those choices? Results: What happened in the end?

Think of the best examples you can give to the most common questions. Under the pressure of the interview you might not have enough time to dig trough your professional life in the search for the situations which are best at showcasing your competencies. Take time to make lsit of competencies relevant for the type of job you want and make a list of 3-5 situations from your past when you shined for each of them.

Usually, it helps to prepare yourself in advance with relevant examples both when you failed and also when you succeeded. Nobody expects you to always win. The recruiter also wants to know what have you learned from your mistakes and how you deal with that. Do not go into many details: expose the context, tell your solution at that time and draw the conclusion. You also have to adapt the speach according to the person in front of you. Some are more open and they want to know you better as soft skills, some just follow a guideline in order to highlight your hard skills. And if the question is not clear ask them to rephrase it.

One way to do this is to turn your duties into accomplishments by removing the term "responsible for" from your resume. We don't want to know what you were responsible for, we want to know what you did. For example, instead of saying you were "responsible for sales in the Western region", you might say you "increased sales 38% in your first 6 months by focusing on previous customers who had not been contacted in the last 6 months." Another example: Instead of saying "As HR Director, was responsible for saving money on corporate benefits.", you could say "I shopped for a long-term disability insurance and found a package that offered the same benefits for 12% less than we were paying, saving the organization over $65,000 per year.

I agree that the best way to show your impact is with numbers. Be prepared to demonstrate your success with proof in numbers and be honest about it because and do not exagerate with your success.

When addressing about gaps or challenges there is the tendency to build up justifications or giving opinions. Sticking to the facts will make it more neutral. For ex: ?? I took a year off to take care of my family during relocating from Z to A. During this time I learned how to (add something relevant for the position)

When demonstrating how your experience aligns with the job, focus on the goals you reached that mirror what they are looking for. If the job is looking for strong client communication skills, tell them how you resolved customer concerns, or created a stronger communication plan for your clients.

It's key for interviewees to nail this part of the interview as 'last impressions' are equally as important as the 'first impression'! To ace it, ensure that the questions are: 1) well researched - not something that can be easily googled with a quick search 2) relevant for the role - a question tailored/specific to the role of the interviewer, i.e what is the most rewarding project you've worked on so far 3) steers away from negative company publicity or potentially controversial topics

I encourage job seekers to not ask questions they can find on the website, such as hours of operation, the available benefits, etc. Some questions I have used: What would your expectations be of me in the first 6 months? Can you tell me about my direct reports? What are their strengths and the team’s biggest challenges? What learning and development opportunities will I have in this role? How does the team I’ll be part of continue to grow professionally? Is there anything else I can provide you with that would be helpful? What are the next steps in the process, and when might I expect to hear from you?
