1 Identify your sources

Well, we can write our own stories making them original. However, if we are looking into an in-depth fact about what is happening in our community, we need a factual source for authenticity. There are a lot of unverified sources of information which can be cause bias to our stories and credibility if not verified

Another source of bias is the language and tone you use in your story. How do you describe, label, or frame your subjects, events, or issues? How do you use adjectives, adverbs, or modifiers? How do you avoid loaded, vague, or sensational words? To edit your words, you need to check their precision, neutrality, and consistency. Make sure you use specific, factual, and objective words. Avoid words that imply judgment, emotion, or exaggeration. Use the same words for similar situations and groups. Use quotation marks, brackets, or parentheses to indicate words that are not your own.

Word usage is diverse depending on the context it is been used and the reaction it is intended to elicit from the reader. Every writer has their signature in their work, some can be controversial and some play it safe. So this aspect of wording is more personal than literal

One hard and fast rule I have when writing stories is to always use the third person. For exmaple, "John Doe told ABC Publication in an interview" instead of "John Doe told me in an interview." I also try to avoid using adjectives and adverbs as much as possible unless a source uses them.

The structure is key to any story. By having a flow of ideas, one is able to captivate the reader however for some dramatic form of reading, the flow can be twisted to give an impression of mystery to the leader. If the structure is too obvious, especially in a story, the reader will be bored. The structure can not be standardized for all but is dependent on the written story and the level of creativity of the writer.

A fourth way to edit your stories for bias is to seek feedback from others. How do you solicit, receive, or incorporate feedback from your editors, colleagues, or sources? How do you handle criticism, corrections, or complaints? How do you acknowledge and learn from your mistakes? To seek feedback, you need to be open, humble, and responsive. Make sure you ask for feedback from people who have different perspectives, backgrounds, and expertise than you. Listen to feedback carefully and respectfully. Make changes when necessary and admit errors when appropriate. Learn from feedback and improve your skills and knowledge.

A fifth way to edit your stories for bias is to follow guidelines from your organization, industry, or profession. What are the standards, codes, or policies that govern your journalism? How do you comply with them in your reporting, writing, and editing? How do you handle ethical dilemmas or conflicts of interest? To follow guidelines, you need to be aware, informed, and accountable. Make sure you know and understand the guidelines that apply to your journalism. Follow them consistently and transparently.
