To become better at system design, you need to have a solid understanding of the components that comprise a scalable software. You should have conceptual clarity in the following concepts - 1. Databases 2. API Design 3. Protocols - HTTP, TCP, UDP, etc 4. Cloud design patterns - Circuit breakers, Sidecar, etc 5. Components - CDNs, Load Balancers, Object stores 6. Caching 7. Queueing systems 8. Communication - Synchronous and Asynchronous To sharpen your skills further, pick up an open source project, install it on your machine, understand the working nd read the code. If you follow these steps, you will definitely gain expertise in system design.

In my everyday work of design systems, I realized there are a couple of essential things I wish I had learned earlier in my career. These are computer networks and database management. These topics might not get much attention from developers, but they are super important for building systems that can handle a lot, work well, and stay strong against different problems. Understanding these basics is key to designing systems that grow, run smoothly, and handle challenges effectively.

In my experience, technical blogs and research papers from leading companies are great sources of knowledge to learn about development in system design. In my experience, sharing knowledge with the community is a great way to learn new things. I make sure to read a technical blog or research paper every week and write a Linkedin post or blog on Medium about it.

There are lots of frameworks and software components that can solve your specific problem, you just have to test them out or at least get to know about them. So always be eager to discover new ways of system design.

Follow Industry Blogs and Websites: Regularly read blogs and websites related to technology, software development, and system design. Examples include TechCrunch, Hacker News, and Medium. Engage in Online Communities: Join forums and communities where professionals discuss the latest trends and share insights. Platforms like Stack Overflow, Reddit (e.g., r/programming), and LinkedIn groups can be valuable.

One of the ways you can sharpen your system design skills is by following the tech blogs, reading research papers and contributing to the tech communities. Although it's not possible to read every other blog post or research paper, you can take one blog post, dive deep into it and then share your learnings with the community. You can join multiple communities on forums like reddit, dicord or slack and don't hesitate to ask simple questions and genuinely help others. Moreover, you should also introspect and find areas where you are weak in system design and then work on it by going through the fundamentals and applying first principles thinking.

Portfolio could be a great piece to share the specific knowledge too. In which we can add our details and the required details for the other people to get to know about me and others more thoroughly.

Your portfolio is created by you, rather than determined for you by someone else (like a bunch of hiring managers). It reflects your professional identity and potential. It includes your unique combination of skills, experiences, and talents that can be mixed, matched, and blended in different ways.

If you have a full time job, building a portfolio can be difficult in case the job is demanding. In such cases, you can write a blog post and publish it via your Company's blog. Later, share it on hackernews, devurls, reddit or any other forum.

Clear communication is so essential. It not only helps understand coworkers better, it’s also required to deliver your message through correctly. So, don’t take short cuts when it comes to quality communication, whether in-person or online.

In addition showcasing proper documentation skills can be an advantage. By clearly documenting your system designs, it makes it easy for others to understand and maintain the systems you've created.

Express your thoughts clearly and concisely. Avoid jargon when unnecessary and ensure your message is easily understandable. Pay close attention to others, demonstrating that you value their input. Respond thoughtfully to show that you've genuinely absorbed the information.

Creativity is one of the core aspects when creating a portfolio. The more unique and outstanding your projects are, the more chances you have to stand out as a developer.

Reviewing the whole idea from bottom to top and viceversa. Do several draws, try to understand and properly generated a "graphical construct" of your idea of understanding about all the requirements. Show it to the power users and stakeholders and try to capture their ideas and reactions on how they see "your doodle about how the system should be". Think and review again the diagram and think about "the sidelines" of the design. Try to think outside of the box to be able to see any posible blindspots in the diagram.
