I’ve always started with the end in mind. Primarily, automation should reduce cost to produce and/or improve customer experience. Decide on the future state of both: define the target cost to produce and map the ideal customer experience. Then, perform a gap analysis (mostly data) between current state and future state which will identify opportunities to improve in both areas. The findings from the gap analysis will serve as the strategic roadmap,setting priority for automation initiatives and will act as a driver in key decisions like choosing service providers that align with future state results.
