How can you develop a radiation safety program for a new laboratory?

In my experience, it depends on the activity of the source that I will use, thus I could calculate the half value layer for shielding material and what is the best type, such as lead, that I could use for the source and the entire lab to avoid any leakage outside with respect to frequent monitoring the exposure at least once a month and installing proper radiation detectors, and the last thing when disposed of the radiation source, I have to fellow the nuclear regulations in my country with respect to transportation procedures till reach the final disposal facility.

You also need to know the skill level for the user of the source.For example Dentist can easily use dental x-ray with basic skills for radiation protection but not CT-Scan,Civil Engineer will require radiation safety training before he uses nuclear density gauge (troxler) Therefore the staff skills are important to assess.

In my opinion, experts should not be sourced from regulatory authorities to avoid potential conflicts of interest. This precaution is essential as the work of the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) may be subject to audits by regulatory authorities

Given the critical importance of the Radiation Safety Manual (RSM), it is imperative that this document be written in language that is easily understood by all members of the laboratory. Both management and lab staff must ensure that every individual comprehends the content of the manual. This inclusive approach is essential to prevent any member from being left behind in terms of understanding the guidelines and protocols outlined within the RSM.
