Pretotyping is a technique for testing - and validating ideas quickly and cheap, founded by Savoia. It involves creating a simplified version of a product or service to collect user feedback and understand market demand. It’s a non-working prototype. Pretotyping reduces the risk of failure by assessing market response early in the development process. A famous pretotyping story is how Tesla ‘faked’ their first electrical car, the Roadster, using a so-called ‘glider’ of a Lotus Elise to confront their potential customers with a ‘real car’, leading to 250+ launching customers who paid $ 5000,- in advance.

Everyone agrees that testing small to avoid failing big ones is good advice; however, this should not be followed blindly. Some VCs, consultants and so on, are blind enough to only see through the “business as usual” tunnel. Sometimes the minimum in your business case is not the minimum that everyone understands as the right “size” for an MVP. Yes, “size” matters, but you’re the one who really knows the right fit, so keep getting closer, but don’t be scared by the “echo tunnel.” Most of them are just repeating what they have already heard or read somewhere. It's better to fail than never start. When you try and fail, you gain valuable insights that you wouldn't have gained otherwise. What I've learnt in my journey is many times you build some hypotheses around a market or user behaviour or product, and there's no definitive way to confirm their accuracy without developing the minimum viable product (MVP) and releasing it. The product or solution will continue to evolve and improve with time. So yes, experimentation is very important.

IDEO Design Thinking alongside direct and in-direct audience observation can allow for multiple MVPs (Minimum Viable Product) to be created for A/B Testing. This could prove to be a great foundation for pivoting.
