How can you develop leadership skills as a cybersecurity professional in systems management?

Serving as the president of Air Command and Staff College, our leadership courses started with the premise: Know yourself to lead yourself; Lead yourself to lead others; Know the team to lead the team. Leaders often fail because they fail to lead themselves. If a leader is not honest with themselves or genuinely introspective, it’s challenging to regulate one’s emotions, presence, poise, decision making and delivery for maximum influence.

- Mentor others. Sharing your knowledge and expertise with others is a great way to develop leadership skills. - Lead by example. Set a good example for others by practicing what you preach. - Develop a cybersecurity training program. - Collaborate with other departments. Work with other departments within the organization to help them understand the importance of cybersecurity and how it affects their work. - Stay current with industry trends. Keep up-to-date with the latest developments in cybersecurity and systems management. - Take on leadership roles. Take on leadership roles within the organization or in industry groups. - Develop communication skills. Develop strong communication skills to effectively communicate with others.

In my experience, democratic leadership styles are indicative of "people pleasers". Granted, there is definitely room for democratic leadership but this type of leadership on a consistent basis is only reserved for highly cohesive teams that have operated and worked together for some time. True, all of them have strengths and weaknesses but that leads to a more critical question: When to implement these different leadership styles. The best leaders I've ever worked with will lean heavily on two of these styles but will not be afraid to embrace the remaining styles, whatever they may be.

In my way, Leadership style should have mix and blend of different personalities like sometime friend, supervisor, instructor, judge and most important harsh boss. Teams like such thing in their leader and they are comfortable with such approaches. they feel responsibility and eager to prove them in allocated jobs. sometime fails and ready to discuss. mix and blend personality become more interactive for team building and become good leader.

My style is more like a wise and smooth combination between a Democratic & a Visionary Model, because from my own experience I've been learning continuously about those ways and many others pathways who lead me to Express my self and described my personal style as it's written above.

This is such an important asset to have. Mentors are someone that won't always tell you what you want to hear, but they will tell what you need to hear. One of the greatest things about mentors is that they'll always tell you about their failures. The reason they're so willing to share this experience is to prevent you from making the same mistakes and dealing with the same anguish they went through.

Self assessment is most important part of Leadership skill. by this way, we can evaluate the areas where need improvement. Role models and mentors attracts us to improve those gaps. Sharpening knowledge and skill can be achieved when we start learning from mentors and role models. Adhering these practices helps a lot in each areas even in professional and personal.

Good leaders will always be willing to listen and follow. Too often, I've worked under toxic leadership that embraced the "my way or the highway" mentality only to see their retention rate take a nosedive. If you're in a leadership position, don't forget; you can't be a leader if you don't have people to lead - so take care of the people you're leading.

Feedback section is also important pillar. in my way, i sharing continuous status reports, team meetings, management updates, dashboard etc.. sometime very bad in follow ups. but it helps to assess myself and my teams where we are standing and what people have in their mind. Positive feedback always helps to motivate where negative feedback always shows the improvement areas. each negative feedback is a opportunity to discuss with team to identify gaps, rectify them and come up with new Avtar. during the discussion, take ideas from everyone and let other members to contribute pros/cons as per their understanding. at the end, we will have final list of actions with proper justification and forecasted results.

Clear communication and documentation of these standards help staff understand their roles. Leaders must be moral. Companies storing sensitive data and/or personal information must embrace ethical methods for data loss prevention, reporting, and compliance. Security executives create standards and must make ethical judgments.
