In my experience as a CEO and EFNJ, every person can benefit from learning about entrepreneurial mindset. I never thought of myself as “entrepreneurial” until I learned about the theoretical construct of effectuation, which University of Virginia Darden School scholar, Saras Sarasvathy has written, researched and spoken about to global audiences. Knowing the mindset and applying it to work and life for all personality types is transformational.

In my experience, I encourage students to double down on their strengths. Most often they have difficulty articulating their strengths so I point them to ask those who know them best - family, friends, and of course, educators.

Your learning goals should be relevant to your personality type and your business idea or stage. Learning goals will depend on your personality type. In my experience, leaning into your natural style or strength will help you to be more successful. If you know yourself by taking an online inventory (many free online versions are available) you can begin. For example if you are more introverted and attending a business networking event, you can arrive prepared by bringing an extroverted friend or having questions and answers pre-prepared.

3 Select your learning methods

The third step is to select your learning methods, which are the ways you prefer to acquire and apply new knowledge and skills. Your learning methods should match your personality type and your learning goals. For example, if you are a practical learner who likes to learn by doing, you might want to choose hands-on activities, simulations, or case studies. If you are a theoretical learner who likes to learn by understanding, you might want to choose lectures, readings, or podcasts.

Again, my preference is to lean in to what is comfortable for you. An introvert may prefer to read a book and an extrovert might love a speed networking experience with new people. For me, as an ENFJ I evaluate how I feel. Zoom meetings zap my energy, while in-person meetings leave me feeling energized. It’s different for different personalities. Know thyself and lean into that.

The fourth step is to find your learning resources, which are the sources of information and guidance you can use for your entrepreneurship education program. Your learning resources should be credible, accessible, and diverse. For example, if you are a self-directed learner who likes to learn at your own pace, you might want to find online courses, books, or blogs that cover your topics of interest.
