How can you develop an effective cybersecurity training program?

What worked for me so well was to study the current practices in place and measure the gaps. Identify these gaps and then put together the scope.

-it’s imperative to understand the strategic environment you’re operating in. That includes state actors targeting you for military, espionage, or geopolitical gain. It also includes non-state actors such as cyber criminals, hacktivists, and the like. Understanding these groups, their motivations, their historical targets will help define risk. Without understanding risk there can be no risk management. Without risk management, there is no foundation for cyber security be it training or physical investment.

Overemphasis on internal assessment risks myopia. While crucial, focusing solely on immediate needs might neglect emerging threats. A forward-thinking cybersecurity program should not just address current gaps but anticipate future challenges. Rigidity in program design risks obsolescence in the rapidly evolving cybersecurity landscape. Balance historical assessment with adaptability to ensure your training program doesn't become a relic in the face of dynamic cyber threats.

1.Start with very basic and communication method must not be very technical. 2. the sessions must arranged/schedule frequently or on defined frequency. 3. Plan a separate session for BoDs, Senior Management and Privilege/critical users.

Do not try to build an exhaustive list of deficiencies at the beginning of this exercise; otherwise, you will spend extraneous amounts of time planning without execution. Focus on the major pain points you need to remedy - as you dive deeper into those domains, additional items will become apparent.

Since 1980 when I was first hired to provide training in Leading, Communicating, Teaming, Creative Thinking and some related topics Sadly too few attendees or students from Chiefs or Directors to Lts...Police, Fire, Prison truly applied what they learned in workshops, seminars, breakout sessions, masters degree (40 hrs) classes and earned their actual degrees truly used the material they passed tests about. A real life example always works well. Show and share the most recent incident. Evaluate what went wrong and how was it managed and how could have this managed better.

Always search for satisfying the demand of the learner is the key to draw his attention. Putting specs in your material customized to the needs will shorten the way to his mind

Effective learning needs to involve students in cybersecurity training. Adding enhanced and interactive components improves learning while also making the training easier. By adding a human element, storytelling helps people understand and remember difficult ideas. Learning that is social and collaborative improves the experience even more by promoting knowledge sharing and a sense of community.

To engage people in anything you need to be interested in them… genuinely… You need to understand that they are the key element to any challenge that you have to overcome or achieve… Always remember that: genuinely care about people… truly care about them… and certainly, you can count on them!

Engage your learners by offering them mentorship, peer to peer learning and consider doing a leadership board wherein individuals can share their thoughts. Appreciate individuals for active participation from time to time.

No one relates to an arbitrary example from someone 5 years ago. Make your training REAL. When trying to drive awareness I always try to pull relevant and current examples of how simple actions resulted into big problems. This year we used the example of what happened with YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips and how a seemingly simple email from a “sponsor” resulted in a massive take over and attack on their channel. We knew our audience sees emails like that all the time and it helped drive engagement in the learning. Making it real helps bring the learning back to them and what they can do to protect the organization.

Appreciation and recognition goes a long way. Imagine sharing weekly tips, sharing best practices once in a week. Imagine timely pop ups, alerts.

One of the most challenging things about cybersecurity is that it feels "scary" and so people avoid it. The more organizations can embed this into the culture and continue to have conversations about it. Have a culture of talking about the importance of it and learning together. Don't just create a training once a year and hope people will remember. We need to continue to hear the message over and over and over.

If cybersecurity is deemed "important", make it required training. And, though training is important, it can't take all day so, make training concise, relevant to their role, and accessible. Also, its important to have follow through. So, if it is required, send friendly but annoying reminders until it is completed and, send a list of those who do not completed it to their supervisor and the top sponsor for visibility. There is no need to be mean-spirited or punitive with this and, you must give warning but, if training is important, be and hold people accountable, possibly even affecting their "at risk" or bonus compensation. For example, while an role may be eligible for a bonus, they must complete all required training to qualify.

Begin with the end in mind. Know your baseline breach or other data rates by some meaningful basis such as business unit, employee level or function, or location and then present periodic (quarterly?) follow up metrics in which the latest outcomes are superimposed over training completion data. Also, review where the most risks and breaches occur (that you know about!) and leverage your resources against those. Measure and repeat! Finally, while you are looking at inhouse data, consider the ecosystem as well. For example, if you are "up" in attacks, is it just your organization or, is "everyone" being attacked more? This context is valuable to interpreting the success of your training efforts.

Developing an effective cybersecurity training program requires a holistic approach, considering technical aspects and the human element. As Roderick highlighted, understanding the behavioral aspects of your target audience is crucial. People may grasp theoretical knowledge, but their actual behavior in response to cyber threats is where the rubber meets the road. Integrating simulated real-world cyber incidents provides invaluable insights into how well employees apply their training. Ultimately, a successful cybersecurity training program fosters a mindset that embraces and practices security principles across the organization.

Effective cybersecurity awareness training programs teach employees about the powerful roles they play in protecting their organizations from cyber attacks and keep them informed about the ever-changing threat landscape. Ineffective programs abound, however, with dull and outdated content failing to effectively engage users and, therefore, leaving organizations open to unnecessary cybersecurity risks. When an organization's employees don't understand cybersecurity threats and their roles in protecting systems and data - and, therefore, the company itself - they are likely to inadvertently or intentionally undermine security controls. This can result in attackers compromising their accounts, which can lead to devastating security incidents.

What surprises me everytime is the lack of the actual human Side of cyber security strategies. Dispite all the efforts and technology we put in, people still click those d*mn links in e-mails. Rationally they know they shouldn't , but still they do. A very important part of cyber security strategy therefore is the behavior of your target audience. Understanding how they behave (within this context), and why they do it, is the key to make cyber security a succes!

Most companies have phishing (and smishing and vishing) programs that are pretty effective, when kept evergreen. Cyber policy training needs to get the right training to the right audience members as efficiently as possible. Risk-averse leaders will tend to take a conservative ‘just in case’ approach and want to train every employee on every policy. This will dilute the memorability (and thus compliance) across the entire population. The approach should be targeted so that each role gets training on the policies most applicable to them. It is also important to have messaging around the importance of cyber security to the company overall cascaded from leadership. And the consequences of non-compliance should be made very clear.
