Empowerment in the workplace results in higher levels of employee confudence and greater involvement both in existing initiatives and in the creation of new initiatives. One common bias is the tendency to support and empower some employee groups while micromanaging other groups.

IHE's have to take a further step than just to celebrate diversity. They must recognize the strength that individual and demographic experiences contribute.

When the focus is on leadership development, too often the team collaborative is neglected. Furthermore, individual strengths are ignored in the quest to fit the individual in a category. Strong project teams exist not because of a strong lead role, but rather because the strengths and fit of every team member are maximized. When this is the norm, any individual will naturally develop the ability to take the lead in coordinating similar projects. Develop the individual and allow them to thrive. Successful teams will follow.

To promote and advocate for diversity and inclusion in higher education, institutions must prioritize leadership commitment, review policies and practices, and actively seek diverse hiring. An inclusive curriculum should reflect varied perspectives, and professional development opportunities on bias, cultural competence, and inclusive teaching should be provided. Safe spaces for open dialogue and support resources for underrepresented individuals are essential, alongside recognition of diversity achievements. Engaging with the broader community and regularly assessing progress in these efforts ensures an ongoing commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable educational environment.
