Reading peer reviewed research articles and further holding discussions with statisticians, expert researchers in data analysis-interpretations will be highly useful in acquiring those analytical skills over time.

Well first and foremost you have to take a formal class or some sort of formal education in basic research methodology and biostatistics. These are the two basic core skills that are necessary to do meaningful research and biology and life sciences. This should also include a strong course on bioethics and the ethics of research on human subjects. Informed consent needs to be understandable by the people who are reading it and what you are going to do with the data and or any samples you take in the future need to be clearly spelled out and plain language and understandable by an average person.
