How can you develop an ambitious yet realistic business development plan?

This is one of the first things I coach my clients on….. identifying what we know and conversely what we don’t is a very positive step.

In addition to the above, I think you need a clear understanding of your culture. What and who are you now? What is it going to look and feel like in your business in 3,4 and 5 years time. What are the behaviours? What are people going to feel when they walk into your business?

If you are serious about your business, you need to work with a qualified business plan agent that has knowledge of your business, clients and understanding. When it comes to financial projections use worse case scenario numbers. Do Not flower or raise the bar on reality. It will only hurt you. Any other advice I can offer please let me know. Knowing your end customer is key for any business development plan. Starting with customer insights and market trends/emerging innovation in your industry, to understand where you want to go with your business in a measured way, will help develop a compelling business development plan.

In my opinion, you need to work closely with two greatest friend while developing a ambitous yet realistic business plan. 1. Objective 2. Practical Implementation Both of them are poles apart but there are some points where they agree with each other and exactly that is the point where your business plan will work most effectively. A Simple solution to the problem is to engage with more and more learned people and the workforce responsible for implementation of the same.

Defining your business vision involves outlining the long-term impact you want your business to have. It's a broad, aspirational concept of the future. Start by identifying your business's purpose, then envision where you want to be in the future. Break down this vision into smaller, achievable goals, ensuring they are specific, measurable, and time-bound.

Adequate internal and external scanning should be carried out with the use of appropriate tools SWOT, PEST etc in crafting a realistic business plan.

Creating succinct goals and focusing on the privileged few is critical to success. Too many goals or goals that are conflicting create confusion and make organizational alignment more challenging.

I would only add that one needs to consider Target Geographies as well as Target Markets. Tightening the focus offers a better chance to succeed.

Market research and stakeholder analysis should include both existing and target customers and stakeholders. The quality of data and insights will be improved by learning from past successes.

I like to gather my execution actions/tactics into groups that I call Strategic Pillars. Then regular, recurring meetings are set to get updates/feedback on each Pillar. If you did this for each Action/tactic, then there would be far too many meetings… better to group them.

100% agree! There are 4 steps to change: 1. Awareness - repeatedly communicate the plan in multiple ways on multiple platforms 2. Adoption - ensure that key stakeholders fully understand and adopt the Strategic Plan and are able to communicate the plan down into the organization. Each level in the organization needs to clearly understand how their daily tasks contribute to the success of the Strategic plan. 3. Alignment - this is the key to success. If all teams understand and adopt the plan and trust managements’ guidance and leadership, then you can achieve alignment. 4. Change Implementation - only now can you implement the change and experience success

Just ask ChatGPT the same question to save yourself lots of unnecessary management time, and then modify it to suit your own specific requirements ( Both a positive use of AI capabilities, and a huge saving of mgm’t time

It all sounds fine but you can follow these steps and still be unsuccessful. I picked up the pieces of a new business venture which lost ￡500,000 in its 1st year. This was a PLC company and they followed your process, including 2 years of market research. What they failed to understand was the "new" material they supplied couldn't be cut on the customers existing equipment. So, after the 1st order there were no repeats. With a lot of work I managed to turn the business into profit after 6 months. My advice would be to ensure you fully understand the business/marketplace you want to enter/develop and make a thorough cradle to grave assessment. Importantly this will include everything from processing to recycling/disposal of your product

My 2 cents...A good business plan has to be very strategic - looking at your business or technology from all angles. This includes current market, target market, logistics, pricing, competition, data analysis et al. And the creation of the plan cannot be in a silo, it must include team members and collaboration.

Your legacy lives on in your business and one of the most important aspects of the business plan includes your exit strategy. Consider including a target timeline of accomplishing how your legacy will continue past your working years, even in the beginning. Having the end in mind will allow you to make intentional decisions for your long term goals. The beginning, middle, and end are equal important parts of any business plan.

Fairly achievable by market research and clear,specific goals, iterative and relevant business development strategies rely heavily on SWOT, realistic financial projections and flexible implementation plans.
