Here are some key factors to consider.
The first step is to clearly define the business problem that you want to solve with ML. What is the goal, the scope, the expected outcome, and the value proposition of the project? How will you measure the success and the impact of the solution? How does the project align with the strategic priorities and the vision of the organization? You need to have a clear and compelling answer to these questions before moving forward.
Start with these key steps to determine feasibility of an ML project. Step 1: Articulate the problem by understanding the goal, scope, expected outcome, and value proposition. Example: Problem: How to accurately predict and manage inventory levels to reduce overstock and stockouts Goal: Optimize inventory Scope: Main product lines Outcome: Reduction in inventory costs by 15% Value proposition: improved efficiency and customer satisfaction Step 2: Establish metrics and criteria to measure the success and impact of the ML solution. How much data do you need to train and test the model? What types of data do you need (numeric, categorical, text, image, audio, etc.)? How clean, consistent, and complete is the data? How frequently and timely is the data updated?
In my experience as a Data- and ML Engineering Consultant, some of the key aspects that I noticed to be key in assessing data availability and quality are: - Source: Identify data origins and ensure alignment with project goals and legalities. - Format: Determine data format to plan necessary preprocessing steps. - Volume: Assess if data quantity suffices for effective model training and testing. - Variety: Evaluate data types for model accuracy and processing complexity. - Veracity: Check data quality and plan for potential cleansing and enrichment. - Velocity: Understand data update frequency to design appropriate data pipelines. Considering these points ensures a robust data foundation for effective machine learning solutions.
The third step is to choose the appropriate ML technique for the project. ML techniques can be broadly classified into three categories: supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning. Supervised learning is when you have labeled data and you want to predict an output based on the input. Unsupervised learning is when you have unlabeled data and you want to discover patterns or clusters in the data. Reinforcement learning is when you have an agent that learns from its own actions and rewards in an environment. The fourth step is to design and develop the ML model for the project. The ML model is the mathematical representation of the data and the relationship between the input and the output. You need to choose the right algorithm, parameters, features, and architecture for the model. You also need to train, validate, and test the model using various metrics and techniques to evaluate its performance, accuracy, and generalization. You need to optimize and fine-tune the model to improve its results and avoid overfitting or underfitting.
The essential factors to consider in designing and developing an AI model: Select an appropriate algorithm aligning with the nature of the data and the problem at hand. Select good features that significantly enhance the Model's ability to learn and make accurate predictions. Perform feature engineering like transforming them. Design the architecture by considering the number of layers, units per layer, and connections. Train the Model using a dataset and adjust its parameters. Monitor the training process. Validate with a separate dataset not used in training. Test the Model with the attest dataset and evaluate its performance. Optimize the architecture to enhance its performance and balance underfitting and overfitting.

You need to consider the following aspects of feasibility: technical, operational, economic, and ethical. Do you have the right skills, tools, and resources to complete the project? Can you integrate the model with the existing systems and processes? Can you justify the cost and the return on investment of the project? Can you ensure the fairness, transparency, and accountability of the model? You need to weigh the pros and cons of the project and decide if it is worth pursuing.
I would consider the level of effort required for developing, deploying, and maintaining the model in production as well. A preferred strategy for machine learning projects involves breaking them down into well-defined steps, each with its associated LOE. This method allows for precise LOE estimates for tasks with low uncertainty, while tasks with higher uncertainty are assigned an LOE range. This approach not only boosts confidence among product managers when integrating models into the product roadmap but also emphasizes the importance of delivering incremental value throughout the project rather than solely at the end.
