How can you determine if a job is a perfect fit for your personal values?

Values are the emotions you want to feel on a daily basis. Thus, you have to drill down to the emotion you are really after instead of only knowing the means to the end. For example, you might say family is important to you. The questions to ask are "what does family give you" and "how does it make you feel?" Getting the clarity on your values help you be that version of you that makes life rich and meaningful for you, and that allows you to produce the experiences and results you want

This exercise is a unique and eye-opening opportunity to ask yourself what is important to you in life. It sometimes reveals aspects you had not thought about.

My top 3 questions for determining if a company meets culture standards. 1. Can you provide examples of how you’re honoring your core values, specifically [insert the ones that matter most]? 2. What do the values mean to you? 3. Why do employees choose this company?

Talking to current and former employees that you have a connection with - for an objective opinion - helps. Ask them what aspects they appreciate the most and which the least to get a practical understanding of the culture. Particularly for very large organizations try and get as close as you can to your target team/function/location for the inputs to be as directly relevant as possible.

It's important to align the company's offerings with where you see yourself in the future. If you want to be in a leadership role in a few years, you'll have to look at companies that provides the resources and opportunities to help you get there. By reflecting on your values and the job's attributes, you can make informed decisions about the fit of a job for your personal values.

There is also an opportunity for adding value to the organization even though you identify a gap in the alignment of values. If the organzation see the value in you and you can contribute with certain strengths the organization doesnt currently have, it could be an opportunity to help the organization to the next level. It is important though that you align with the purpose of the organization

I once accepted to work for a Family Office which did not have the same values. I did it because I was starting my business and I needed new clients. Once my company took off, I decided to stop my relationship with them.

It's virtually certain that you won't know 100% during the interview process so you are always going to take some sort of gamble. So be very aware in the first month or two, ask around and talk to people asking "how are things done around here". You'll learn quite quickly where you are not in alignment and then you can make the decision on what you need to "trade off" if you stay.

Another important aspect is to Evaluate Growth Opportunities. 1) Skills Development: Check if the company invests in employee training. Some companies allocate a yearly budget for employees to attend workshops, webinars, or courses. 2) Career Progression: Understand if there's a clear career path for your role. For example, if you're joining as an associate, what is the roadmap to becoming a senior member? Ask about how often performance reviews are conducted and how promotions are decided. Is it based on seniority, merit, or a combination? 3) Cross-Training Opportunities: Does the company encourage employees to learn about different roles? For example, a marketing professional might want to learn about sales or product management.

At first, we have to select what are the personal values we want to prioritise. It is needless to mention that all our values may not be available in any organization. There always remains a tradeoff area. Don't be rigit on any point of contract. Your values may differ from other requirements. Job is job.
