Defining clear and SMART objectives and outcomes is fundamental in shaping a successful professional development (PD) program. Specific objectives, such as increasing the adoption of project-based learning, provide focus and direction. Measurable outcomes enable you to assess progress and effectiveness. Achievable goals ensure that your PD program remains practical and attainable within your resources. Relevant objectives should align with the broader goals of your educational institution. Lastly, time-bound outcomes establish a timeline for achieving results. By setting these objectives and outcomes based on data analysis, you create a roadmap for a purposeful and effective PD program that enhances both teacher and student learning.

Achievable goals depends on where you are starting from. There are two main variables in teaching. The teachers and the students. If for example you set up the above goal for a 20% increase in project based learning but no one in your school had either taught it or experienced it. That is a goal that has a good chance of failing. It’s hard to completely change an existing culture. So step one of goal setting is where is the school at stage one of this process. Where do we want to get to. And then what steps will we need to take to get there? Make sure both students and teachers are part of the initial evaluation before you begin.

Whatever content and delivery method you choose keep these 3 ideas in mind 1. Theory is not practice. Bring in experts who are actually teaching students. For example I don’t listen to parenting advice from people who have one child. Because they don’t really understand what it means to parent 4 children. 2. Don’t make it busy work. I didn’t like it when I was in second grade and I don’t like it now at 60. 3. The whole purpose of this process is to help teachers have more tools to be better teachers. Ask both teachers and students what kind of delivery methods would they be interested in experiencing. And use those to deliver your PD course.
