Make peace with the fact at the beginning of the design process that it's not perfect but as they say in lean, don't let perfect stand in the way of better. Define the framework for the design but leave room in the process and the product itself for iteration and refinement based on learning's from prototyping and experimentation. Try to incorporate an open architecture that could easily integrate with new technologies e.g. firmware updates possible for future versions. Fixed architectures have made for modular platforms partly for this reason - building in future flexibility and upgrade capability from inception.

Embracing uncertainty ultimately requires a deeper understanding of the nature of change and how it can impact the system. With proper planning and a risk management strategy in place, a resilient system can remain functional even in the face of unexpected events. By identifying potential risks and developing contingency plans, designers can ensure that their systems can continue to work effectively even when conditions are uncertain or unfamiliar.

At the outset it is the abstraction layers and interfaces that define module interactions.Secondly keep the internal logic flexible and system configurable through external data sources.Also introducing the Event driven design and Dynamic loading ensures less consumption of memory.

It's not just about modularity, but how you compose the system altogether. You have to be able to analyze the impacts of change in a reasonably rapid fashion. You need layering and loose coupling as well as partially ordered dependencies.

Note this is an important distinction between a system vs. an application. Specific applications (built on top of a system/platform) often target a specific user/persona/role. But the underlying system needs to support multiple personas and roles to encourage a collaborative environment.

One of the hardest and yet most rewarding challenges of systems design is evaluating and defining what the system is aiming to accomplish - what the problem space even IS, and the boundaries of what you the designers can affect or change to address the problems or target transformations necessary to meet your design goals. If your design team does not integrate the multiple perspectives of the community of stakeholders into the process of problem definition, you risk getting started with an incomplete understanding of the resources, constraints, requirements, and opportunities standing before you. Spending more time on the problem definition and systems analysis can save you many man-hours of revision down the line.

The diversity is from top level investment through main contractors, sub contractors, managers, technicians and end users. This facilitates best value for the end product.

Also tie this back to point #2 of modularity. These two go hand-in-hand where modularity enables evolution by being able to replace or add individual modules instead of needing to do a complete system rebuild/re-code.

Deliberately iterate and alternate between divergent and convergent thought, ideation, and analysis, gradually narrowing scope to hone in on a solution or a package of solutions.

Support evolution is just restating the original aim. This is "to do A, do A". Synonyms and restating the original in different phaseology - this is just tautology.

Keep an eye on technology forecasting to be ready for any step changes after your innovations curve levels out. It would be an added bonus if you can grow the edges of your product with adding new technology if your framework is still viable. This will fund the high R&D costs to try and hit a step change home run

the components of the system need to be self-protective. Any system needs to be able to sufficiently persist - that is, to survive and thrive while under adversity. When the elements, components, subsystems, etc. can protect themselves, you avoid or at least limit the risk of swapping out parts but reducing the systems ability to persistent under adversity.

Low coupling, high cohesion – well architected/modular with very well (documented) specified hardware and software interfaces. Additionally adding new modalities may present new regulatory challenges that were not an issue to the current system. Power budget, mutually exclusive or simultaneous feature operation? Usability impact given added flexibility/capability. Don’t burden a 3rd generation platform with a 1st generation science project that has a lot of maturing to do. Let the 1st generation capability go through its learning curves standalone prior to adding it to platform – establish some criteria for getting on the train.

I would say it's all of the above. Uncertainty and evolution are tightly coupled. Modularity and diversity are tools to achieve the best starting point of your system, and the most efficient enhancements and refinements in subsequent iterations.

System Engineering is an Art and Science both. There are few important things to keep in mind: 1. System Engineering is not about only system but about business capability which ultimately derived from Busines Strategy and org objective. 2. Now System Engineering always aligned to Business Strategy then it should derive from Business Architecture which ultimately maps to system architecture. 3. Coming back to system Engineering which starts from functional as well as non-functional requirements plays critical role to keep system agile and scalable. 4. Next step about Architecture & design to keep system scalable for future requirements. So business strategy, business architecture, System Architecture and design plays critical role.
