How can you design surgical training activities that simulate real-life conditions?

A simulation center with actors and all. This is not a unique idea, it is done all the time. As for the actors, there are plenty of aspiring actors everywhere, just pay them well.

Am an acupuncturist. We do not use surgery in our practice. We use needles, lasers, electrostim, and nutrition! I specialize in healing diseases by changing a personal chemistry through food selections based on color and flavor, which are sensory factors used by our body to direct the energy bound in foods consumed.

Realistic Feel: Animal tissues can closely mimic the feel of human tissues, providing trainees with a realistic experience of handling and manipulating tissues during surgery. Variety of Procedures: Different types of animal tissues can be used to practice a wide range of surgical procedures, from suturing and knot tying to more complex operations. Immediate Feedback: Trainees can see and feel the results of their actions immediately, which can aid in learning and skill acquisition. Ethical Considerations: While using animal tissues for training does raise ethical considerations, many programs use tissues from animals that were already euthanized for other reasons, thus minimizing additional harm.

Covid and AI have radically changed the way training is delivered around the world and the earlier we embrace this the quicker we can design training that is safe and effective. I have to train staff during COVID, especially redeployed staff. The training we usually deliver in the patient's home has to be delivered another way and this influenced how we deliver training as we recover from COVID. There are AI that can now perform surgery and they have been tried and tested so we must be open to change and design training that can work during and after a pandemic.

Hardware and Software Compatibility: Ensuring that the VR system is compatible with existing hardware and software can be a challenge. It’s important to choose a system that can integrate smoothly with the current infrastructure. Reliability: The VR system must be reliable and robust enough to handle intensive training sessions without crashing or lagging. This requires rigorous testing and regular maintenance. Quality of Simulation: The VR system must be able to provide high-quality, realistic simulations. This includes accurate representation of human anatomy and realistic haptic feedback.

Hands-On Training: Use cadavers or animal models for trainees to practice surgical techniques. This allows them to get a feel for the tools and techniques in a low-risk environment. Simulation: Use high-fidelity simulators that replicate human anatomy and physiology as closely as possible. These simulators allow trainees to practice procedures and manage complications in a controlled environment.

Mentorship and Observation: Have trainees observe experienced surgeons and assist in real surgeries. This gives them a chance to see how the skills they’ve learned are applied in real-life situations. Feedback and Assessment: Regularly assess trainee progress and provide constructive feedback. This could involve direct observation, reviewing video recordings of the trainee performing a procedure, or computer-based assessments in the case of VR training. Continual Learning: Medicine and surgery are constantly evolving fields. Ensure that there are opportunities for ongoing learning and skill development, even after initial training is completed.

Consider the good old fashioned, Group discussions, Case scenarios and Moulage's to still offer the best training. Creating opportunities to offer One on One Case Scenario or physical classes to have and promote interpersonal interactions,.. Creating opportunities not have morbidity and mortality discussions as well as clinical audits and journal clubs still go along way and offer utmost excellence in training

When all is said and done, high fidelity training is the greatest way to improve and test skill under stress and a real patient even though the incisions may be animal or synthetic but the pressure must be on during these session so when the chaos is not there and the situation is controlled, the mind will experience and small incident with calm and actions would be faster as decision making had been refined under pressure. The result is a ready surgeon, with great clinical decision making skills and identification of priority of requirement. A more logical process that reduces risk.

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR): VR and AR technologies can provide immersive, realistic surgical training experiences. They can simulate a variety of scenarios, from routine procedures to rare complications.
