How can you design a science curriculum that is engaging and relevant for high school students?

In addition to the goals and objectives of external entities like teachers, textbook publishers and testing companies, it is important to help students align with their own life goals and objectives. Many students think the course content is something they must learn but don’t see how this will apply to their actual lives. Students should be allowed to align their personal goals and objectives with those imposed externally.

Teachers expend a lot of time and energy looking for relevant and engaging topics. This robs the students of the opportunity to do the same kind of critical thinking. Have students use generative AI to help answer the question “How does this apply to my personal interests, goals and objectives?” The students will need to articulate what those are in the prompt. The answers will be different for each student.

Contextual units of work are designed to intertwine elements of the students’ real world into their learning to help them retain the information by being able to make meaningful connections. Contextual units can be fun or can also provide students with opportunities to explore some of the more complex parts of their world. Contextual units provide a framework for students to better understand and apply the concepts they are learning. By placing the scientific concepts within a real-world context, students can make connections between what they are learning and the world around them, which can help to make the material more relevant, engaging, and meaningful.

Students will be more engaged if they develop their own questions and are taught how to develop meaningful open-ended questions they find worth exploring and explaining. Providing them with predetermined questions takes away critical thinking and inquiry learning opportunities.

Collaboration is of paramount importance in the science classroom because it mirrors the very essence of the scientific profession itself. Science is a collective effort, with scientists working together to explore, discover, and innovate. In the classroom, collaboration encourages students to pool their diverse talents, perspectives, and ideas, leading to more comprehensive problem-solving and a deeper grasp of scientific concepts. Moreover, teamwork cultivates vital skills such as communication, critical thinking, and adaptability, which are not only fundamental in science but also indispensable in the broader spectrum of life and work.

Too often students are prohibited from using technology and media in school settings. In many cases it is not so important to teach them how to use technology but to allow them to use the media they already know.

Technology provides science educators with the opportunity to reimagine the way that they present information to their students as well as the way that their students create artefacts to demonstrate their learning. The SAMR model is a framework for evaluating and enhancing the use of technology in education. At its core, the model is centred around the idea that technology can be used to augment, modify, or redefine traditional teaching and learning activities. The letters SAMR stand for ‘substitution’, ‘augmentation’, ‘modification’ and ‘redefinition’ and was developed by Dr Ruben Puentedura as a way to help educators understand how to effectively integrate technology into their classrooms in a meaningful way.

Differentiation is crucial in the science classroom because it ensures that students can access and engage with the material, leading to more meaningful understanding and increased academic success. Several activities can provide students with the opportunity to essentially ‘choose their own adventure’ and as a result, interact with the content in a way that is accessible to them. By giving students the freedom to select tasks that suit their comfort level, educators can tailor the learning experience to each student's needs and abilities. These activities encourage self-directed learning and allow for personalised pathways to mastery, ensuring that all students can engage with content at a level appropriate for their development.

Evaluation uses a variety of tools. (1) a written proposal evaluated on critical thinking skills, quality of questions, written communication and creativity. (2) A sketch-notebook/journal/lab book that verifies student work and demonstrates ability to collect, analyze and reflect on data. (3) A project and portfolio that demonstrates their inquiry, analytic and application skills. (4) A presentation/slide deck/video that communicates findings and shows visual and verbal communication skills. (5) Students generate tests using generative AI pertaining to their particular inquiry assessed on their ability to analyze the validity and accuracy of the questions as well as answer the questions in a testing situation.

Incorporating real-world applications into the science curriculum is a strategic approach to make scientific concepts more tangible and relevant for high school students.
