How can you design reusable software components?

One important think to take in consideration when looking for existing libraries, components or APIs is to make sure you get ones that are stable and well maintained. There is always a risk when adding any dependencies. Imagine that you find something that does exactly what you need, however down the road this component doesn’t get updates and/or breaks with new versions of your platform. Or course we must search for existing solutions and make no point to re-write code for well know components, libraries and APIs. Use caution when selecting anything to be part of your solutions.

Identifying common functionality is crucial for designing reusable software components. A systematic approach, including domain and use case analysis, reveals consistently needed functionalities. This insight enables abstraction for creating reusable components. Exploring existing libraries provides valuable references, understanding established practices and adaptable patterns for integration. The process involves a comprehensive exploration of specific application needs, ensuring reusable components align with industry best practices. This dual perspective enhances versatility and longevity, addressing immediate requirements while adhering to standards.

Limit the scope. A common mistake I see people make is including too much functionality in a single module. A module should have a clear purpose. It must do a single thing and do it right. Try not to bloat the module with functionality that's outside its responsibility. Even if adding additional features can make the job of some users simpler, adding them blures the main purpose of the module and consequently confusion in terms of its usability and maintanence. When in doubt, favor to not add new features inside the module. Handle it elsewhere until you clearly see it fits into its resposibility and doesn't hurt the usability of the module.

I disagree with the part about flexibility of reusable component. I think that for the consumers of the component it is good to have some constraints. In most cases the reusable component has some generic or template parameter and in some languages like Swift it is very easy to apply generics constraints, but e.g. in C++ as usual you have to write a lot of code manually and the great thing that C++ provides meta programming which basically could help to make reusable component similar to the one implemented in more convenient programming language and allows to make compile time checks. This would allow to make reusable component more safe for the consumers and avoid runtime errors or incorrect use.

Emphasizing abstraction and encapsulation in designing reusable components is pivotal. Abstraction, concealing implementation details, simplifies component use, fostering adaptability. Encapsulation acts as a guardian, preserving a component's internal integrity. These principles aren't just steps; they're a paradigm shift towards modular, flexible, and future-proof software.
