As someone who has conducted research with children, I wish more researchers would do this. I remember filling out pages and pages for the ethics committee, and while it was daunting and time consuming, and at times I wished I had not chosen to focus on children, it was extremely valuable. One important component of designing a clinical trial is asking for feedback from the patient population of interest. Unfortunately, it is often forgotten during the design phase. Patient feedback should be obtained for two perspectives of the trial. First, the outcomes being investigated. Which ones have most importance to the patient. Second, are there any important ones missing that the patients deem significant. This little addition can help enrollment and more importantly make for a better understanding of the efficacy of the drug being studied.

As nurses, we spend significant time with patients and we have seen the need to always put the patient first. Similarly, as community health nursing specialists, we value the place of seeking the perspectives of the community before developing any intervention. We need to explore their needs, challenges, experiences so we can carefully tailor interventions that will address the community needs. Also, there is the place of formative and summative evaluation. While the intervention is ongoing, we must evaluate the intervention to be sure that it is meeting the needs of the clients. This can be done after the intervention too, and necessary adjustments can be made to the intervention to suit the participants.

In my opinion, patient organizations should always be consulted in the process of prioritizing research projects. Their opinions matter. In the field of mental health, Dutch patient organizations have been very successful and their actions put mental health on the Dutch political agenda, thus allocating research funds.

Work closely with patient advocacy organizations in the space. Keep patients up to date every step of the way. Build trust by having town halls and open conversation with the patient population.

Give research back. Share the results of the research with participants. Too often, research “takes”, leaves town, and communities never hear back. Participants deserve to know the outcomes of which they helped contribute.
