AN EMOTIONAL CONNECTION IS KEY. It's important to help students build self-efficacy and truly understand that together they can positively impact the world. I've seen student engagement and accelerated learning grow leaps and bounds when students are truly solving problems they are passionate about and are emotionally connected. Some students my struggle to identify an area they are passionate about but most always have something that keeps them up at night or a problem they hate. This is a great place to start. You may not know what you love but more often than not you know what you hate. Start here. Enable the students to define the problem they will solve. This will build their confidence and promote engagement early in the process.

3 Plan the project phases and activities

The third step to design project work is to plan the project phases and activities that will guide your students through the project cycle. You should consider how you will organize your students into groups, assign roles and responsibilities, and facilitate collaboration and communication among them. It's important to ensure formative assessment is included, allowing students to reflect at various points throughout the project. A one-off overall Group Grade at the end of the project is immensely unpopular with students (for obvious reasons). Therefore I would build an individual Log/Journal of their learning journey about the group, themselves and the project itself into stages of the project.

6 Celebrate and showcase the project work

At TiE Young Entrepreneurs, high school students turn their ideas into startups. Three principles to promote collaboration / comm skills: 1. We measure teamwork - workload distribution, new skills acquired, output matches team size, diversity (gender, school, grade mix) 2. We Mix Roles - Each student takes a role, but must be ready to explain the work of their team mates, so they gain empathy and appreciation for their work. 3. We Practice Storytelling - we have the teams pitch their ideas in-class, incorporating the latest customer feedback. Students must constantly improve their story, which requires EQ, creativity, humility. Most of our students have never collaborated effectively, but cite this as a top skill, post-program.

Evaluation, reflection, and debrief of successes and failures. Give students a chance to evaluate their and their peers’ work; reflect on their experience; and debrief what went well and what didn’t. These are integral to learning and help students develop self awareness. These also normalize failure, which can be a difficult experience for students.
