How can you design EdTech for students with different learning speeds?

Understanding the diverse needs of your students is crucial. For example, in my work developing educational software, I've found that creating learner personas based on real data and feedback helps tailor the design to better meet students' needs. This involves collecting information through surveys and interviews to capture a wide range of abilities, preferences, and challenges. By doing so, you can ensure your EdTech solution is relevant and accessible to all learners.

Crafting adaptive learning paths, modular content, and flexible assessments prioritizing comprehension over speed is pivotal for addressing diverse student learning speeds. Leveraging adaptive feedback, resource libraries, and collaborative spaces fosters a holistic and inclusive digital learning environment. Continuous progress tracking ensures timely interventions, empowering students of all speeds.

Proper student profiling should be administered to the students to gather multimodal data suitable for analytics to identify their strengths and weaknesses as regards their learning abilities. The learning interventions that are relevant to the learning objectives should be prepared based on the pattern discovered from the implementation of diagnostic and descriptive analytics. For students with special needs, intelligent tutoring systems can be utilised to ensure a more accurate adaptive learning environment.

Offering various ways for students to engage with content allows them to learn in a way that suits them best. This means integrating multiple formats such as videos, interactive simulations, and text-based materials within your platform. For instance, a math learning app could include visual problem-solving games, step-by-step instructional videos, and written practice exercises to cater to different learning preferences.

One year, I introduced a Scratch coding activity to second graders and quickly saw a skill gap—some students flew through it while others struggled with basic drag-and-drop. To keep everyone engaged, I provided multiple options: a step-by-step video for those who needed extra guidance, challenge extensions for fast finishers, and unplugged coding puzzles for those overwhelmed by the interface. By offering different entry points, all students could succeed at their own pace. This experience shaped how I design EdTech lessons—layered with choices so every learner feels supported and challenged.

Even with self-paced learning, be sure to break major assessments into smaller, more manageable assessments. For example, don't give a self-paced learner a major paper that's simply due at the end-of-semester, with no opportunity for feedback. Have them submit topic proposals, annotated bibliographies, outlines, a first paragraph, a rough draft, perhaps a peer review, and a final draft. Each of these is an opportunity for interaction to support students.

Self-paced learning modules enable students to learn at their own speed, reducing pressure and enhancing comprehension. Implementing adaptive learning algorithms that adjust the difficulty based on the learner's performance can significantly improve individual learning experiences. An EdTech platform I collaborated on used such algorithms to present more challenging content only when the learner was ready, effectively supporting both quick and slow learners.

In addition to adaptive learning, gamification and micro-learning, I think differentiated learning will be helpful too. Differentiated learning can be applied in Edtech through the use of scaffolded support by providing hints, additional resources or guided practice before learners are now given independent activities. It can also be applied by using customizable learning paths that can be customized by either the educators or the learners themselves (depending on their level). Think of it like..giving task cards to learners to choose which task they are able to start with and they keep choosing at your own pace until they get a desired level. All of these can also be implemented using gamification.

We use Articulate Rise to support bite-sized learning. There are a number of topics and lessons and it allows for flexible, offline learning. Each section also caters to a variety of learning preferences ie. Audio, interactive, webinars, and quizzes. Content can be absorbed in many ways without being repetitive.

Feedback is essential for learning. Integrating instant, constructive feedback into your EdTech solution helps students understand their progress and areas for improvement. For example, after each activity or quiz, providing specific feedback on what was done well and what could be improved encourages learners to reflect on their learning process.

During a typing lesson with first graders, I noticed some students struggled with finger placement while others sped ahead. Instead of waiting until the end to correct mistakes, I used instant feedback tools to guide them in real time. A color-coded keyboard chart helped students self-check, and I used verbal cues like “check your home row!” to reinforce habits. For those who needed extra support, I highlighted problem keys in their practice logs. By embedding feedback into the lesson, students improved faster and felt encouraged rather than frustrated. This approach ensures learners get guidance when they need it most—right in the moment.

Creating opportunities for students to work together and communicate can enrich the learning experience. Tools like discussion forums, group projects, and peer review functionalities within the EdTech platform can foster a sense of community and provide additional support among learners with varying speeds.

When teaching coding with Scratch, I paired students for a “Navigator & Driver” challenge—one controlled the mouse while the other gave directions. At first, some students struggled to communicate, but as they worked through debugging together, they started asking better questions and explaining their thinking. Midway, I had them switch roles, reinforcing teamwork. By the end, even my quietest students were engaged, excitedly sharing ideas. This experience showed me that structured collaboration not only builds tech skills but also teaches communication, problem-solving, and patience—key skills for any digital learner.

Assessments over tests! We do not know if we are successful without a feedback loop. Through our experience, using frequent, low-stakes assessments to monitor student progress and identify areas where they may need additional support or time. Provide immediate feedback to help students stay on track.

Continuous evaluation and improvement based on user feedback and performance data ensure that the EdTech solution remains effective and relevant. Regular updates based on analytics and user suggestions can enhance the learning experience for all students.

I will answer this with one acronym - 21CLD (21st Century Learning Design). Self-regulation, along with other 21CLD skills, is crucial in this context, providing short and long-term goals with accessible feedback for student improvement. Differentiation poses a significant challenge in education, with teachers often grappling to address diverse student needs. Employing an approach like "progress and coach," as found in Microsoft Accelerators, allows students to benefit from personalized learning through the coach feature, while teachers monitor outcomes using the progress features.

In my computer lab, I found that traditional whole-group instruction left some students bored while others struggled to keep up. To fix this, I tried a modified flipped-classroom model. Instead of explaining everything at once, I created short instructional videos that students could watch at their own pace. Those who caught on quickly jumped right into the activity, while others rewatched key parts before starting. This freed me up to give individual support where it was needed most. The result? More engaged students, fewer hands in the air, and a smoother workflow—all without sacrificing rigor or support.
