How can you design data models that meet the needs of different business units?

When it comes to data models, it is important not to take a one size fits all approach. Here is an approach (why, how, dynamism): 1. First, figure out the why. Why are you designing the model? What business issue are you trying to solve? 2. Once you have figured out the why, figure out the how. This is how you will design the model to align with the business issue. 3. Always incorporate dynamism in your model. Businesses are dynamic by nature, they are evolving all the time. It is important that you design a model that can easily adapt to the changing needs of the business. 4. Always put in place systems to constantly evaluate your models for relevance. It is important to ensure that your model continues to produce its intended results.

Almost all business units have different and specific requirements, decision making processes, workflows, and more. My company and I use a back to basics approach to each: 1. Engage with members of each business unit to comprehend their specific needs. Meet THEM where they are. 2. Ensure each data model can ingest data from the multiple sources relevant to their team. 3. Design the models to be flexible and adaptable to the ever-changing needs of the unit and scalable as needed also. 4. Allow for customization & personalization that suits them. 5. The UI must be intuitive and accommodate the technical acumen of each individual unit. 6. Get feedback! Improvement can only come if you know what they want.

The importance of this step in the analytics process should not be underestimated. Until you can put yourself in the shoes of a person "on the ground" in a business unit and properly understand their day-to-day operations, you shouldn't even be touching any code or data. This holds true whether you are consulting for a client or working as part of an embedded data team within your current organisation.

The major thing is to understand each business needs or requirements, to achieve this you have to engage with the different stakeholders. Thereafter customise each data model accordingly.
