How can you design a curriculum with a backward approach?

I believe all educationalists must ask themselves a question : what is the purpose of education? My answer is usually: to create an individual who would be a worthy addition to society and who could contribute to economic growth and societal progress. With such an outlook, the focus then shifts from curriculum itself to demonstrable skills from the teaching… it would no longer be about what to remember and how much to remember to pass an exam but how much has been understood, assimilated and how much can be used to apply to new situations to produce an acceptable solution. The focus should not to produce exactly the skills which industry requires (as this will keep changing over time) but rather to train students to be adaptable.

Backward design is a visionary approach to curriculum planning that I wholeheartedly embrace as an educator. It centers on the fundamental principle that education should be about fostering understanding and equipping students with transferable skills, not just cramming facts. Starting with the end goals and working backward empowers us to create purposeful and meaningful learning experiences. For me, backward design means that "day one" of class is actually the final step in planning; it's the bottom rung of a ladder. I start by running my eyes up to the top rung and planning the skills, ideas, and deep knowledge I want students to walk away with once they've reached that very top. So, I start my planning at the end goal and plan the steps going down to "lesson one."

One conceives, perceives and visualises the goal, the end product and thereafter aligns the process and milestones in order to reach the end result that has been perceived. In this regards a backward design is the best way to approach the curriculum after the Learner Profile has been perceived and learning outcomes have been defined. This approach helps in minimising the gaps and helps in standardization of the process, resources and capacity building.

Backward planning is envisioning a Goal and then provide a structured approach to planning that helps individuals and organizations move from vision to execution by breaking down complex objectives into actionable steps. Scaffolding the goal and making it achievable to learners.

Use the model - 1. Start with an end goal in mind (what do I want my students to know/remember in week/year/10 years after the unit). 2. Design assessment that supports point 1 3. List necessary content, skills, and concepts to be successful in the assessment in point 2 4. Plan for teaching each of them. 5 Add assessments for learning to ensure progress. Don't reinvent the wheel. You don't have to. There has been a lot written and tested on Backward planning/design. Use the resources available.

Once you have defined the desired end result that is the learner profile, you must apply diagnostic tools and techniques to ascertain the existing standards, mindsets and aspirations of your institution, facilitators, students and parents. This will aid you in setting the timelines, planning procurement of resources and desired interventions and capacity building programmes. Another thing that is very crucial here is the structure of reflections and reviews- both for individuals and the institution. This is help you as an education leaders to match your progress with the plans and therefore aid in taking corrective measures and revisions you may so need during the process.

Consider student feedback and performance data. Reflect on your design process to identify challenges and areas for improvement. Based on these insights, modify the curriculum as needed to enhance its impact.

Backward design is an excellent tool for planning interdisciplinary units. Interdisciplinary education involves integrating concepts and methods from multiple disciplines to address complex, real-world problems or topics. Backward design helps ensure that interdisciplinary units are coherent, meaningful, and aligned with specific learning objectives. An example an unit in grade 3/4 the goal is to make them aware of how different jobs play important role in society. They investigate- Research skill, collaborate and do group work. Create props- Creativity. Role play-Presentation, Communication, Creativity. This can be made measurable by using a desired rubric for assessment.

Backward design, rooted in defining clear outcomes first, is a powerful tool in curriculum development. As a Continuous Improvement Specialist, I emphasize this approach, especially in STEM education and, more notably, in integrating AI and ML. Why? It begins with the end in mind. First, we determine what students need to understand. Next, we design assessments to measure understanding. Finally, we craft lessons. For instance, in teaching AI, we first aim for students to understand its role in data analysis and then apply this in hands-on tasks. This method ensures relevancy and depth in learning. Go beyond the classroom assessments when implementing backwards design and consider - how and why will this skill actually be used in the real world. That's it! That's the end goal. If your students cannot move from understanding all the way to application - you've wasted precious instructional time.
