How can you design accessible dashboards in web applications?

Also, provide options for users to customize their viewing experience, such as adjusting text sizes or color schemes, to accommodate diverse accessibility needs.

In my experience, before starting its important to Conduct research to understand the diverse needs and preferences of your users, including those with disabilities. Consider factors such as different types of impairments (e.g., visual, motor, cognitive) and assistive technologies they may use.

Through user research methods like surveys and interviews, I've gained valuable insights into the diverse needs and preferences of our dashboard users. Tailoring the design to accommodate various ages, languages, and device preferences significantly improved user satisfaction. Understanding the specific goals and abilities of our audience allowed us to create a more intuitive and user-friendly dashboard experience.

Design your dashboard to support multiple languages and cultural preferences. Provide language options and ensure that text content is properly localized and accessible to users from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

Creating accessible dashboards is not just about compliance with legal standards; it's about ensuring inclusivity and providing equal access to information for all users. Additionally, incorporating text labels and tooltips as alternatives to color-coded information has made our dashboard more inclusive, catering to a broader range of users.

Conduct usability testing with users of diverse abilities, including individuals with disabilities, to identify any accessibility barriers or usability issues. Gather feedback and iterate on your design to address any identified issues and improve overall accessibility. Address any reported violations of accessibility standards and guidelines to maintain compliance and improve user experience.

Create a constant feedback loop. User requirements change and evolve over time. Some of the MVPs are not even considered a feature anymore.

Responsive Design: Design the dashboard to be responsive across different devices and screen sizes, including desktops, tablets, and smartphones. This ensures that users can access the dashboard from any device and still have a consistent and usable experience. For instance, in a banking dashboard, ensure that account balances, transaction histories, and other critical information are displayed in a clear and organized manner on both desktop and mobile devices.

In making dashboards accessible, it's not just about 'packaging' and visualising it in an interface. It's also about making the content (i.e. written text, alert messages, buttons, captions, graphs) clear enough to grasp and understand. Creating clear and simple content is an art form in communication, editing, organising and being focused. It's important to know that doing these things won't make your content 'dumber'. It makes your content more inclusive—you reach a broader group of people (i.e. people outside academia, data-oriented professions, culture and age) through practising equity. Accessibility impacts content as much as it relates to user interfaces and digital platforms.

Provide documentation and training materials to help users understand how to navigate and use the accessible features of your dashboard. This can include keyboard shortcuts, accessibility tips, and information on how to customize settings for individual needs.
