Communication is one of the most fundamental thing we do as humans. And despite the fact that our work as engineers tend to involved many calculations and drawings, an experienced engineer knows that he/she has to be a good communicator. As a leader of an engineering design team, communication is even more important for you to be successful. The leader will have to communicate the objectives of each design along with scope, time and budget. Further, if one is a member of the engineering team, he/she will have to give initial feedback after receiving any assignment from the supervisor. If a team member has any innovative ideas, this will have to be first communicated and go through stages of review, all involving communication.

Showcasing your skills and expertise can be done in several ways: 1. Look for opportunities to take the lead on tasks that play to your strengths. For example, if you are an expert in a particular software, offer to train other team members. 2. Be willing to share your expertise with others. This can be done through presentations, training sessions and etc. 3. Be a problem solver: Use your skills and expertise to help solve problems that arise during the project. 4. Be open to learning: Even if you are an expert in a particular area, be open to learning from others on the team. Most Civil Engineers seek to plan well such that they can avoid changes and ultimately increased cost. However, despite the best plans changes do happen in civil engineering and this is where an engineer needs to be flexible. Effectively, engineers need to know what to do when things did not go as planned. With an excellent soil report in-hand and full set of structural drawings, an engineer may arrive on a site for a multi story building and after making the first excavation, found that an area of the foundation is very weak and didn't show up in the initial engineering report. At this stage, the engineer will have to be flexible, therefore looking into the problem and work at a quick fix.

At any level of the profession, collaboration is critical. On many infrastructure projects, the Project Civil engineer must collaborator with a number of individual and professionals to ensure the work gets done. An engineer will find that during the life time of a project, he will have to collaborate with Local Authorities, Government Agency juts to ensure that a project gets approved. During the construction period, one will have to collaborate with fellow employees and even the contractor for project success.

Often we are taught as engineers to insert the designs from similar projects to simplify the process and increase profit. However, this is a perfect opportunity to create value. For our designs, we often return to previous clients, contractors, and designers to learn how to quickly improve the design and create value from our experiences. While not the cheapest alternative, it ensures the quality that our clients value.
