I would argue that you also need to be proactive in how you tell the stories of your successes and how your failures have only helped you to find better solutions. So many professionals in our industry know how to sell an event, but struggle to sell themselves. Taking control of that narrative and proactively building out your story is key.

nderstand Event Objectives: Align your work with the overall objectives and goals of each event. Understanding the purpose and desired outcomes allows you to contribute more effectively. Quantify Achievements: Whenever possible, quantify your achievements. For example, highlight the number of successful events you've managed, improvements in attendee satisfaction, or cost savings through efficient planning. Showcase Problem-Solving Skills: Highlight instances where you successfully resolved challenges or unexpected issues during events. Showcase your ability to think on your feet and find solutions in a fast-paced environment.

The event production world is akin to a dynamic stage where unexpected turns are part of the script. Here, adaptability is not just an asset but a necessity. Some people will say, “there are no bad ideas” RED FLAG! There are a lot of bad ideas, but be willing to get creative in sussing out the good from the bad. As I always say when someone asks how things are going, knowing full well it’s not going well, I say, “ Making lemonade!” I know that through my creativity, I can turn the sourest lemons into the sweetest lemonade.

Event production is a broad area that requires so much creativity, industry experience and problem solving. In my experience the best way to demonstrate value is by being collaborative, curious (never stop asking questions and don’t assume anything), transparent and super organised with tasks relating to the project plan. Elevating your live status to the rest of the project team each day/week enables others to see how/where their creativity/input is required.

Your employer will know your value in event production when you take the lead and present an event which you have structured, implemented and delivered successfully. Events are full of Murphy’s laws. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong but usually there are ways around them and that’s where you can shine with strength. Make those calls, convince the right people and get it done as best as you can, to ensure the event is launched successfully and runs well. The sweetener is when attendees of your event are full of praises or leave with verbal acknowledgments of their positive experience. Your work is what will reflect your value.
