I agree with being proactive and adaptable, however I would add "take ownership" to this. People quickly realise who they can count on not to drop things. That makes these people extremely valuable and results in more opportunities and recognition.

I believe Leadership skills, ownership, prompt response, and a technology aficionado who has a passion for the latest technologies and trends is the best fit for promotion in IT Industry.

As valuable as being able to forecast potential problems - and getting ahead of them - can be, when you don't have your team (clients included) pulling along with you, you'll still be running risks that are entirely avoidable. I've found that engagement is what truly ties together a successful run. So bring the team together (naysayers and supporters all) and give each the opportunity to poke holes in the plan, and offer their Plan Bs. You'll have greater buy-in, and significantly more support, as and when parachutes should need to be deployed. TLDR?: Communicate++

Being curious is the first thing in any profession to succeed, and IT outsourcing is no different. The only difference and significant one at that is the pace of change. New technologies emerge every two years and new tools that can enhance productivity are coming almost every six months. To keep up with this pace of change one need to outline a dedicated time for continuous learning. Learnings have to follow a well-defined path. Generally T shaped. A professional need t o achieve deep specialisation. It is often better to have these specialisation certified by specialist bodies. It is good to have a blend of certifications in technology, functional processes, methods of execution like project management, architecture, and business domain.

Often times people focus on learning the technical skills and forget to connect dots on the functional or business level impact which is critical for the success of the project So it is essential to pick up a deep understanding of the business environment and develop a use-case which can have an impact on important business KPI’s like uptime, cost, turn around time, availability, performance etc.,

In our industry, learning is an ongoing journey—it's the lifeline that ensures our relevance and survival. While workplaces offer opportunities, having a self-learning trajectory can keep us aligned with trends. Often, opportunities arrive with strict timelines, demanding an accelerated learning pace. Make sure that the results and achievements are in alignment with business goals and needs. For example, I worked for a manufacturing company in my mid-career and was fortunate enough to go out to operations and come up with direct ways to showcase my results and achievements. You have to be in alignment with goals. That's how you can showcase results and achievements.

Please document and share your successes, especially those that have positively impacted the company. This could include successful project completions, cost savings, client feedback, or other metrics demonstrating your value to the organization.

I agree 100%. Best way to build relationships is to help others with their challenges. Most often our projects habe multiple stakeholders so do incorporate their needs into your project - maybe with minimal extra effort you can achieve more for clients and organization and build great relationship at the same time. This is the most important yet hardest skill. Who do you know? What do you know? This can be very difficult. Find like minded people in your geo location and just go and have drinks. No objectives. The key is trust. Trust each other even if you work for competitors. You're not giving away trade secrets just having a drink. I work in GovCon and it is vital to have "frienenemy" relationships as it really is the only way to move forward.

I believe initiating discussions about a raise begins long before the actual conversation. It involves engaging with your manager early on, gaining a clear understanding of their expectations, and aligning your efforts accordingly. This proactive approach simplifies future discussions, making it easier to demonstrate achieved results against initial objectives. If the offered value doesn't meet expectations, it's essential to clarify the desired outcome and propose actions to achieve it. By ensuring everyone is on the same page, negotiation becomes a constructive dialogue aimed at mutual understanding and growth.

IDK about this. A company will be able to recognize leaders and move forward. As a leader, I knew who my top people were and promoted and compensated them. It usually made me mad when people tried to "upsell" the system.

This is a double edged sword. I have often believed in my theory that the moment you have to pitch in for your promotion, then your work has not created the desired impact for you & your work to get noticed automatically. I have been in the IT services industry for 35 years and in this long career, not once I have gone asking for promotion. All my promotions have come automatically based on the outcomes and impact that I delivered

I am not certain about this, but for me, one way is to come with a proposal. Tell me what you want to do in the future, talk to me about where you want to be skills wise and salary wise, try and work out a plan to achieve rather than an one sided expectation. :) As others have mentioned, performance, enthusiasm, commitment may lead to natural promotion!

I’m not convinced as coach / manager that this proves individual worth. My personal approach has been to allow my results drive my next role / move.

One key aspect that I've found to unfailingly work is by "Adding Value" One can add value both to the client and employer by identifying gaps, risks, bottlenecks and opportunities to improve velocity and efficiency and become their trusted advisor. This can be done irrespective of the role one has, the contract or employment type one is under and always gets the right visibility. So never lose and opportunity to add value. However, doing this merely to get a promotion is short selling yourself. This can get you to places and roles that a typical promotion can't. PS: Mere arm-chair advice isn't adding value, delivering improves results is!

Know your worth "A bottle of water is sold 1$ in Supermarket, 3$ in Coffeeshop, and 5$ in Airport".... Your value can vary based on where you are and how you present yourself. It's a reminder that your skills, abilities, and worth remain constant, but how they're perceived and valued can change based on the environment or situation. Understanding your true value allows you to negotiate confidently, ensuring you're not undervalued and appreciated appropriately for your capabilities and contributions.

In delivery, really know the nuances of the contract. Do not presume you know, that this how you deliver. Contract negotiations are tough and positions are fought for, they are key to profitability and capability. Insist on the sales force giving you insight, even the why positions were taken. As a sales person I have threatened to walk away to gain a position, there is a reason for this. In delivery, do not take a non confrontational approach if it is needed. Usually the client is better informed of the negotiation positions than the delivery team.

If you are working for a services company (an outsourcer) then your likelihood of promotion hinges on client satisfaction, feedback and retention. work tirelessly to identify and promote opportunities where the things you do benefit the client and in turn lead the client to retain your services or sing your praises (testimonials and case studies). The former creates a continued revenue stream for your organisation, the latter opens the door to new opportunities with other clients.
