The most helpful advice I've gotten is to ask myself, "if a neutral person were to observe this entire interaction, would it hint of impropriety?" For example, if I am visiting the industrial site of a potentially regulated entity, I do not allow anyone to pay for my lunch. I always make the statement that if our visit extends over lunch, that I am not allowed to accept the gift of food. I insist that a collection is available for me to chip in, and I am generous paying for both the food and the service. This sends a clear message that I'm aware of the way it may look, and that I'm operating above board. I never regretted this approach, and the industrial hosts seemed also to be relieved that any misunderstanding would be avoided.

Remember this: if you can't explain a concept to a five-year old, you don't understand it well. Keep your explanation as simple as possible, and get deeper as your audience engages you to do so. The best example I know is this: Einstein was approached in the mid-1950s (by a male journalist) to explain the theory of relativity to non-scientists. His response was classically simple: Have you ever noticed how a 1-hour boring lecture seems to go on for hours? While a 1- hour conversation with a beautiful woman goes by in the blink of an eye? That's the theory of relativity. His response was both effective and accurate in answering the question. And moreover, demonstrated Einstein's commanding understanding of the science itself.
